CEO & Winemaker
Justin van Wyk
The young oenologist Justin van Wyk, who has been with the winery since 2008, is the sole CEO and winemaker at Constantia Glen, where he understands the terroir, which is Predestined for high-quality wines, better every year. It is thanks to his enthusiasm and diligence, but above all his professional competence, that such a high level of wine artistry has been achieved at Constantia Glen in such a short time.
The winery is beautifully nestled between the slopes of Constantia Mountain, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and False Bay.
The 60-hectare farm has been owned by the Waibel family since the 1960s and has been subject to considerable changes in the recent past before now being used exclusively for wine growing again for the past twenty years. As is usually the case, faith plays a big role.
In 1990, a large bushfire destroyed almost the entire farm. The forest burned down completely and it was decided to start growing grapes over the next few years after lengthy studies and clean-up work. In 2000, there was another bushfire that burned as close as 80 meters to the farm buildings. The freshly planted vines remained unscathed and so the triumph of Constantia Glen wines could begin. The first commercial wine was finally bottled with the 2007 vintage.
The magnificent «Boutique Winery» can certainly be described as Constantia‘s real jewel. Here, in South Africa‘s oldest wine region, grapes have been grown since the 17th century. Thanks to the nearby ocean and the slightly elevated location, cool conditions prevail. These are particularly well suited to the classic white and red Bordeaux varieties, on whose cultivation Constantia Glen has concentrated from the very beginning. Within a few years, Constantia Glen has found its own very successful style, which combines classic Old World structure with the typically accessible fruit of the New World.
However, the qualitative growth does not only refer to the wines, not at all. Over the years the Tasting Room, which initially had room for only 20 people, has been developed into a first-class wine and food experience. Today, up to 700 people a day visit the winery and enjoy the setting, the view and the great wines together with excellent food. You come as a guest and leave Constantia Glen as a friend.

THREE – 2020
The Constantia Glen THREE, a blend of the three varieties Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, is an excellent example of the new generation of Cape Bordeaux blends, which is in no way inferior to their originals from Europe. The THREE with its velvety texture and soft fruit is more like a representative from St. Emilion or Pomerol.
The 2020 comes along with aromas of dark fruits, ripe blackcurrants and juicy black plums, underpinned by a scent of dried herbs. Beyond the initial ripe fruit flavours, there is a nice spicy complexity and lingering notes of white pepper, graphite and cedar. The dark fruit flavours and distinct spicy notes on the nose follow effortlessly on the first sip, where elegant, velvety tannins envelop the palate with a lively flavour intensity.
The excellent richness and concentration of the finegrained tannins is underlined by an earthy minerality, and the wine‘s inherent freshness provides a long, well-defined finish. This wine is balanced,
elegant and has old world authenticity with its subtle notes of dried herbs underpinning the powerful fruit flavours. The wine appears tight in its youth and has incredible ageing potential
Optimal drinking maturity until 2037. This delicious blend was carefully made from grapes grown on the estate. It is 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon
and 10% Cabernet Franc and matured for 18 months in 25% new, 60% second-fill and 15% third-fill small French oak barrels.

FIVE – 2020
Constantia Glen‘s flagship wine, the FIVE, is a blend of the five archetypal Bordeaux varieties and is arival for any Cape Bordeaux blend. It is also in no way inferior to great calibres from its stylistic home in Bordeaux! But taste it for yourself!
With its Cabernet-based blend, in the style of a Médoc, the FIVE 2020 convinces with perfect balance. The 2020 offers: Dark and deep aromas of sour cherries, ripe blackcurrants and juicy black plums, underpinned by a scent of violets and dried herbs. Spicy background notes of cocoa, cedar and graphite.
The palate reveals a powerful, rich and concentrated attack with dark fruit flavours, while the mid-palate has fantastic balance and finesse. This compelling, structured wine is beautifully centred and has excellent freshness, elegance and depth.
The delicious, fine-grained tannins provide a mouthflattering texture and excellent persistence and length. The wine appears taut in its youth and has
incredible graceful ageing potential.
Optimal drinking maturity until 2037. A carefully crafted blend of 28% Cabernet Franc, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 17% Petit Verdot and 10% Malbec. Matured for 19 months in 72% new and 28% second-fill 225-litre French oak barrels.

I remember the first meeting with Horst Prader, the good soul of Constantia Glen, who has been guiding the Waibel family for over 60 years. It was «love at first sight/sip». Nevertheless, I could never have imagined that we would be so successful together in Switzerland. Over the years, Constantia Glen has become the best-selling Bordeaux blend producer in our range, and that for the right reason! Of course, we have experienced a lot together. My stays at the Constantia Glen Shack* (allotment hut), which fortunately turned out to be a cottage, have deepened and strengthened the partnership. I also took part in various blending tastings, where the composition of the new vintages in the team was decided over two days. Not to forget the many lunches and invitations that I had to endure.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for the friendship, appreciation, support and the great cooperation.
Andy Zimmermann
*Die Shack Story
On my first stay at the cottage, which is in the middle of the Sauvignon Blanc vineyard and has an outdoor shower, I was met at the gate by a security guard.
When I explained that I was Andy and wanted the keys to the cottage, he said: «ahhh, you mean the keys to the shack?» Well, my expectations sank a bit, only to be able to move into my quarters in the solitude of the vineyard with great enthusiasm.
