Old vines and granite soils

The grapes come from around 35-year-old Chenin Blanc vineyards in and around Stellenbosch. These vines grow on weathered granite soils, which provide particularly fine structure and mineral tension.

Granite soils retain little water, forcing the vines to develop deep roots. This leads to greater aromatic concentration and a clear sense of origin in the grapes. At the same time, Stellenbosch’s climate, with warm days and cool nights, ensures slow and even ripening.

The result is grapes with intense fruit and natural freshness. These qualities form the foundation of this Chenin Blanc’s elegance.

Heritage vines as a mark of quality

The Kleine Zalze Chenin Blanc Vineyard Selection 2025 is part of the renowned Heritage Vine Initiative. This certification is only awarded to wines whose vines are at least 35 years old, placing them among the most valuable vineyards in South Africa.

Old vines may produce lower yields, but they bring significantly more concentration, depth and expression to the glass. Every bottle of this wine carries the official Heritage seal, representing origin, maturity and quality at the highest level.

The Old Vine Project

The Old Vine Project is a South African initiative dedicated to the preservation and appreciation of old vineyards. Vines are considered “old vines” from the age of 35 years. While they produce lower yields, they stand out for their exceptional concentration, depth and character.

Precision in the vineyard and the cellar

The work in the vineyard follows a clear goal: quality begins with healthy grapes. Canopy management was deliberately kept minimal to allow sufficient sunlight into the fruit zone while protecting the berries from intense exposure. The grapes were hand-harvested early in the morning and pressed immediately to preserve their freshness. A short period of skin contact added extra Chenin aromas and structure.

Only free-run juice was used for fermentation and transferred into barrels, with no new oak employed so that the character of the terroir remains at the forefront. The wine was then aged on the lees for seven months, giving it its creamy texture and additional aromatic depth.

Kleine Zalze and the Chenin Blanc tradition

The Kleine Zalze estate is one of the established names in Stellenbosch and has stood for precise, terroir-driven wines for decades. Chenin Blanc plays a central role in this. The variety is considered one of South Africa’s most important white grapes and finds ideal conditions in Stellenbosch. Kleine Zalze’s philosophy is based on careful work in the vineyard and a restrained approach in the cellar, with the aim of producing wines that clearly reflect both their origin and their grape variety.

The Vineyard Selection range in particular represents this idea. It highlights the potential of individual vineyards and combines structure, elegance and drinkability. The result is wines that are precise, accessible and at the same time truly characteristic of the Stellenbosch region.

“There is a clear and consistent vision at Kleine Zalze, a golden thread that runs through all our wines. What is especially important to us is that our range of quality wines can be shared and enjoyed by the entire community of wine lovers – regardless of budget or style preference.”

RJ Botha – Cellarmaster of Kleine Zalze
