A winery that helped shape biodynamics at the Cape
When talking about biodynamic viticulture in South Africa, it is almost impossible to overlook Reyneke Wines. The Stellenbosch estate is considered a pioneer of sustainable and natural winemaking and was among the first producers in the country to fully convert to biodynamic methods.
The estate was founded by Johan Reyneke, who in the 1990s began to rethink the family’s vineyards. From the start, his approach was clear. Wine should be produced in harmony with nature, soil and ecosystem. Instead of intensive intervention, Reyneke focused on natural cycles, healthy soils and a long-term perspective. Today, the estate is regarded internationally as a benchmark for biodynamic wines from South Africa and demonstrates how sustainability and quality can come together.
A new range and new labels
With the introduction of new labels, Reyneke has deliberately restructured and more clearly defined its range in recent years. While several different lines existed in the past, the focus today is clearly on the Estate Range, which forms the heart of the winery. At the same time, the style has also evolved. Instead of blends, single-varietal bottlings now take centre stage. Each grape variety is meant to express its own personality and reflect the terroir of Stellenbosch as authentically as possible.
The new labels also reflect this development. They appear more modern and reduced, highlighting the connection between nature, soil and craftsmanship. This makes the winery’s biodynamic philosophy more clearly visible not only in the wine itself, but also in its visual identity.
Biodynamics as the foundation of the philosophy
Reyneke works according to biodynamic principles that view the vineyard as a living organism. Soils are actively built up, while animals, plants and microorganisms form a natural balance. Chemical plant protection products and synthetic fertilisers are consciously avoided. Instead, natural preparations, compost and cover crops strengthen the vitality of the vines. This results in vineyards with great biodiversity and living soils. For Reyneke, this is not a marketing strategy but the foundation for authentic wines with a clear sense of origin.
Organic and biodynamic by conviction
Reyneke produces its wines according to certified organic and biodynamic standards. The focus is not only on sustainability, but also on the quality of the grapes. Healthy soils allow vines to develop deep roots and draw nutrients from different soil layers. This results in greater aromatic complexity in the wine. The vinification follows the same philosophy. In the cellar, work is carried out with minimal intervention. Spontaneous fermentation, restrained use of oak and patience during maturation ensure that the wines retain their natural structure.
Sustainability as a long-term vision
For Johan Reyneke, sustainability is not only a matter of viticulture, but a broader responsibility towards the environment and the community. His philosophy can be summed up in a simple yet powerful idea.
“My dream was to create a successful brand without exploiting farm workers or the natural environment.”
Johan Reyneke
This approach shapes the entire winery. Biodynamic farming, healthy soils and a respectful relationship with nature are integral parts of the daily work. At the same time, Reyneke is also committed to social responsibility and advocates for fair working conditions and long-term development on the farm. In this way, wine is created not just as an agricultural product, but as part of a responsible system that equally values nature, people and quality.

Style of Reyneke wines
Reyneke is particularly known for precise, elegant wines from classic grape varieties such as Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah. They show clear fruit, lively acidity and a mineral structure. The white wines often appear fresh and energetic, with floral notes and fine texture. The red wines present themselves as structured, balanced and with moderate alcohol. It is precisely this balance that has earned Reyneke great international recognition. The wines feel modern without losing their sense of origin.
Conclusion: Reyneke as a pioneer of a new wine philosophy
Reyneke Wines impressively demonstrates what modern winemaking can look like. Biodynamic farming, clear origin and a precise style come together to create wines with real personality.
With the new range and the revised labels, this philosophy is now even more visible. Reyneke therefore remains one of South Africa’s most exciting producers and an important driving force for sustainable viticulture at the Cape.
