South Africa has approximately 3700 hectares of Old Vine vines and ten vineyards over 100 years old.<\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/h4>\n

Vines can live for more than 120 years, yet not all producers keep them that long. Why? Because the yield of the vines decreases significantly from year to year after about 20 years. However, these vines have a significant advantage: they produce more concentrated and intense wines.<\/p>\n

\u00abOld Vine grapes show less fruit but reflect the soil and terroir they were grown. Old Vine is considered quality has denser flavours because the vines root deeper to access water and nutrients\u00bb<\/em><\/strong>, writes our sommelier and wine expert Andy Meyer in our Tip #33\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Thirty-five years old is the minimum age of vines in South Africa. In 2002, the Old Vine Project in South Africa started searching for old vines, and today there are about 3700 hectares of Old Vine vines and ten vineyards that are even older than 100 years. Almost 2000 hectares are planted with the most widely grown variety in South Africa, Chenin Blanc.<\/p>\n
