The results of the Decanter World Wine Awards, the world’s largest and most influential wine competition, are a guide to the dynamic world of wine.<\/h3>\r\n

It is good that South African wines take top places in wine-tasting competitions. The latest stop is called Decanter, which includes one of the biggest wine competitions in the world, the \u00abDecanter World Wine Award\u00bb.<\/p>\r\n

Every year, the results offer surprises and revelations that highlight the growth of quality and consistency – or lack thereof. Discover now the results of the 19th edition of the \u00abDecanter World Wine Awards\u00bb, which sets a new record for wines tasted.<\/p>\r\n

South Africa received 2 Best-in-Show medals, the country’s best result in this category since 2017, and 5 platinum and 39 gold medals.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

What do the Decanter medals mean?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n

The Decanter jury tastes over 18,000 wines from 56 countries every year. Only the best receive a medal. Last year, only 635 wines received a gold medal – 3.51% of the wines submitted. Only 179 wines received platinum. And the highest award – Best in Show – was only given to 50 wines. But what do individual awards mean?<\/p>\r\n

Bronze<\/strong> – 86 to 89 points: well done, solid, satisfying
Silber<\/strong> – 90 to 94 points: high quality, an exciting wine with personality
Gold<\/strong> – 95 to 96 points: an exceptional and remarkable wine
Platin<\/strong> – 97 to 100 points: All gold winners are tasted again. The best of them receive platinum

Even though the pre-season was warm, the long hang time and cooler weather helped to maintain the typical Cabernet identity on the bouquet. Just a hint of fynbos mingles with deliciously dark aromas of redcurrant and cherry on the nose. These follow on the palate, with notes of cedar and spice supporting the fruit on the mid palate. The supple tannin structure provides enough structure but is light enough not to detract from the wine’s very long finish.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This fruit-driven wine tends towards a fresh style with lime, apricot and green pineapple notes on the nose. The oak component presents itself as wood spice notes and is perfectly integrated and not overpowering. On the palate, the subtle sweetness combines with the fresh acidity to create an exquisite wine. As on the nose, the oak component is well integrated and offers vanilla, and coconut notes that balance the fresh and lively fruit and almond notes. The texture is velvety and continues into a long finish.\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Each Spier Creative Block is named after the number of grape varieties used, so Spier Creative Block 2 is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and S\u00e9millon, a work of art in the style of a white Bordeaux. Straw yellow with new green complexes, it flows into the glass and exudes enchanting aromas of gooseberry, tangy lime and white peaches.
