Sauvignon Blanc can be loud. Really loud. A vegetal attack meets a tropical fruit bomb \u2013 all at once, all upfront. But it can be different, too: cool, precise, salty-mineral, with fine acidity and a clear sense of place. No nation shows this better than South Africa.<\/p>\r\n

In Vinum\u2019s latest global tasting, over 80 Sauvignon Blancs from around the world were put to the test. Many were loud, some forgettable. And right in the middle of it all: South Africa. Two wines, two styles \u2013 both outstanding<\/h3>\n

Two South African wines made it into the top five \u2013 and that says more than any theory:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1st Place: Reyneke Sauvignon Blanc 2020<\/a><\/span>, Stellenbosch \u2013 96 points<\/strong>
Biodynamic, full of character, with depth and finesse. This wine isn\u2019t a loud fruit bomb \u2013 it\u2019s more of a quiet observer with presence. Precise acidity, subtle grip on the palate, long finish \u2013 Sauvignon for the seasoned drinker.<\/p>\n

5th Place: Diemersdal Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2022<\/a><\/span>, Durbanville \u2013 94 points<\/strong>
A completely different style: fresher, cooler, more open. Juicy, crisp, inviting. A wine that practically asks you to pour a second glass \u2013 and rightly so. Because it can.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.10.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

No copy-paste Sauvignon here<\/h3>\r\n

What makes South Africa so strong? Its range. From easy-drinking \u201cparty wines\u201d (in the best possible sense!) to finely tuned food companions \u2013 it\u2019s all there. Sometimes ripe and generous, sometimes crisp and taut. And often at half the price of comparable European wines.<\/p>\r\n

Add to that: you can taste where they come from. The cool Atlantic breeze, the stony soils, the winemakers\u2019 appetite for experimentation. <\/strong>South African Sauvignon Blancs are like great conversations \u2013 sometimes challenging, sometimes charming, sometimes surprisingly deep. But boring?
