Day trip to the wine region

Whoever says Stellenbosch must also say wine

Some places unfold their magic when you explore them yourself. Stellenbosch is definitely one of them. Nestled in the idyllic vineyards of South Africa, it promises not only historical treasures, but also culinary delights and unrivalled landscapes.

Stellenbosch is also home to the Department of Viticulture and Oenology of the Stellenbosch University and offers a wide variety of activities throughout the year. There are over 350 different wine farms in the Stellenbosch wine region – from big famous names to tiny boutique wineries that grow and press their great wines in the back of one of the many valleys. The area stretches from Somerset West to the gates of Cape Town and from False Bay to the Banghoek Valley via the Helshoogte Pass.

The charming yet lively university town is an excellent starting point for visits to various wine estates and offers a wide range of accommodation options. Stellenbosch also boasts a large number of restaurants, pubs and wine bars, some of which are very popular, so there is something for every taste.

Visit wineries

Centuries of experience and tradition as well as the optimal climate of the Winelands ensure unbeatable quality. Those interested can see for themselves: most wineries offer tours with wine tastings.

Visit and tasting at the winery «Glenelly»
Pay a visit to the impressive Glenelly winery and taste South African wines «with a French touch»… Tasting Room opens Tue – Sun at 10 am.
Tasting/lunch at the winery «Kleine Zalze»
Kleine Zalze has a golf course, a hotel and the excellent «Terroir» restaurant. Taste the wide range of excellent white and red wines here or combine it with lunch. An alternative is the popular «96 Winery Road», which is very close by.
Cellar tour and tasting at the winery «Vergelegen»
We continue towards Somerset West to the Vergelegen wine estate, which is considered the most beautiful wine estate in South Africa. The two restaurants and the magnificent park-like grounds definitely make a visit here unforgettable.
Tasting and dinner at the winery «Waterkloof»
The spectacular architecture in the midst of the magnificent landscape is simply overwhelming – the wines produced according to biodynamic guidelines are also completely convincing. Round off this day full of highlights with a fine dinner in the elegant restaurant and a fantastic view.
waterkloof

The best time to visit

Stellenbosch shows its most beautiful side in autumn. The climate is similar to that of Cape Town, but with less sea breeze. The town can be visited all year round, but the South African autumn and summer months are particularly recommended. From October to April, the weather is pleasantly warm and dry, ideal for exploring the scenic landscape on hikes or wine tours.
