Tim Atkin Rating
South Africa Special Report 2023
The eighth largest wine producer in the world – South Africa, is honoured in a special report on fabulous 317 pages by the world-famous wine critic Tim Atkin.
In March and June 2023, renowned wine critic Tim Atkin spent more than 4 weeks in the Cape tasting 2206 wines from 419 wine producers. His latest Special Report on South Africa includes tasting notes for 1537 brands that scored more than 90 Tim Atkin points. But it also includes detailed analyses of the current South African wine scene, such as a list of the best restaurants and the controversial annual classification of the best 300 producers. And as is typical for Tim Atkin, he also reveals his wine favourites.
A gold medal was awarded to 201 wines that were rated with more than 95 points. In 2023 there is a highlight of the year, because Tim Aktin rated a special wine with 100 points and in addition three other wines with 99 points. As he writes himself, the excellent results confirm that South Africa produces the best wines in its history. In particular, he highlights the 2017 and 2021 vintages.
Chenin Blanc and Syrah performed the strongest, but there are dozens of different styles among his top wines. The Cape’s diversity is one of its trump cards.
