Longridge Wine State
New wines to enjoy
Those of us who attended the August event could meet Nora Hudson in person and discover from her hand all the characteristics of one of this season’s new releases: Longridge.
Longridge farms an exceptional, small vineyard called Clos du Ciel (above), which was planted at a high density by John and Erica Platter in 1988. It is now farmed biodynamically by Jasper Raats and produces some memorable wines.
Jasper joined Longridge as a consultant in 2011 and has completed the 2010 reds and 2011 whites.
Longridge focuses on the varieties best suited to their climate and soils; Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc (Steen) have stood the test of time, as have the classic reds Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and, of course, South African Pinotage.

This vintage delivered a medium-bodied wine with a spicy nose and light cedar aromas. Ripe but soft tannins complement the flavours of bold dark red fruits and ripe strawberries with hints of dark chocolate, cocoa, green herbs and wet stones on the nose. Well-integrated vanilla oak and enough backbone to age further in the bottle.

Ripe tropical flavours complemented by a subtle minerality that contributes to a wonderful and refreshingly long finish. The Sauvignon Blanc comes from a tiny block on Driefontein, on the slopes of the Helderberg. It is one of the coolest parcels in the Stellenbosch area, as the breezes from False Bay cool it down on hot days. Jasper Raats prefers excellent sites for the Sauvignon Blanc as he likes ripe flavours without losing acidity.

The nose shows cinnamon, black cherries, elegant spices and charcuterie. Well-rounded tannins make for a wine that is accessible but also has enough structure and balance. Serious, smoky, fleshy and compact.
