Value Wine

Robert Parker ratings

In June, the team of the renowned Robert Parker stopped in South Africa to evaluate South African wines. Here are the Value Wine highlights.

Anthony Müller has made the latest assessment of South African wines for Robert Parker’s Magazine. For many months they have been «I seek out new producers, new bottlings and wine expressions from the Western Cape», said Müller.

«I must say that I continue to be thoroughly impressed by the quality, value for cost and expression of site and terroir for much of the new vintages I’ve tasted. With the commanding expressions that capture and captivate the attention of drinkers, the top scores went to a couple of sweet wines, along with a stellar showing of Swartland bottlings from Mullineux and Sadie Family and some rather impressive wines from Hamilton Russell, Keermont, Kershaw, Klein Constantia, Le Riche, Lismore, Raats, Rall, Tesselaarsdal and Warwick».

Müller also emphasises that «With such a diverse story, the men and women of the South African wine industry all play their part, each one unique and integral to the woven tapestry that is the living story of South African wine. With voices that are as drastically different as its landscape, there is always something to discover». The expert also commends«From properties steeped in tradition dating back to 1685, to the new blood with capable, thoughtful hands and only a dozen years into their story, to foreign voices who have found their way to the «rainbow nation», to local, indigenous voices that pave the way for others, there is a wine for everyone.».

Anthony Müller brings us good news: «Stay tuned for more critical reviews and a series of regionally focused reports I plan to roll out in the coming months along with full vintage reports as I continue my coverage of South Africa, its wine industry and my search for the next wine, the next story, the next voice»

Here you will find the wines of the Value category, with Anthony Müller’s reviews by Robert Parker. Have fun!

CHOCOLATE BLOCK
Jonny Fischer’s Afrika Charity – 2020
CHF 27.90 instead of CHF 34.90

90 Points by Robert Parker

Perhaps one of the most floral vintages that I’ve seen in a while, the 2020 Chocolate Block is a blend of 73% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Viognier. The nose is robust, juicy and expressive with hints of bramble, red and black spice and elegant purple flowers. Medium to full-bodied, the mouthfeel displays a balanced structure with focused tannins and lifting acidity that frames the mid-palate. Then wine finishes with a delightfully lingering, fruit-forward essence with a kiss of tar, roses and baked rocks. This will have no challenges making it until its 10th birthday. 2,982 barrels were produced. Give it a try.

WARWICK
The First Lady – Chardonnay – 2021
CHF 11.90 instead of CHF 15.90

89 Points by Robert Parker

Bright and fresh, with a kiss of oak, the 2021 First Lady Chardonnay displays a pale straw color and opens to a delightfully lifted nose that offers ripe notions of grilled yellow apple, pineapple and peach with hints of sweet lemon and baking spices. Medium-bodied, the palate is balanced and well-structured, expressing a kiss of phenolic bitterness while flavors of sweet corn and lemon drop parade in the mouth. The wine concludes with a fresh, clean and lingering finish. The wine rested on the lees for 100 days. About 8% of this wine was barrel fermented in oak. For the price, this is going to be hard to beat, as the First Lady Chardonnay punches above its weight class. Just under 300,000 bottles were made.
