The CEO & Winemaker
Justin van Wyk
The young oenologist Justin van Wyk, who has been with the winery since 2008, has for several years held the sole reins as CEO and winemaker at Constantia Glen, where he increasingly understands the terroir, which is predestined for high-quality wines, year after year. It is thanks to his enthusiasm and diligence, but above all his professional competence, that Constantia Glen has achieved such a high level of winemaking artistry in such a short time.
Constantia Glen
The winery is picturesquely nestled between the slopes of Constantia Mountain, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and False Bay.
The 60-hectare farm has been owned by the Waibel family since the 1960s and has undergone significant changes in recent times, before focusing exclusively on wine production for the past twenty years. As is often the case, fate played a major role.
In 1990, a large bushfire almost destroyed the entire farm. The forest completely burned down, and it was decided to start viticulture over the coming years after lengthy studies and clean-up work. In 2000, there was another bushfire that burned within 80 meters of the farm buildings. The freshly planted vines remained unharmed, and thus the triumph of Constantia Glen wines could begin. The first commercial wine was finally bottled with the 2007 vintage.
The magnificent "Boutique Winery" can certainly be described as a true jewel of Constantia. Here, in South Africa's oldest wine region, grapes have been cultivated since the 17th century. Thanks to the nearby ocean and the slightly elevated location, cool conditions prevail. These are particularly well suited for the classic white and red Bordeaux varieties, on which Constantia Glen has focused its cultivation from the very beginning. Within a few years, Constantia Glen has developed its own, very successful style, which combines classic Old World structure with the typically accessible fruit of the New World.
However, the qualitative growth does not only apply to the wines. Far from it, over the years, the tasting room, which initially only accommodated 20 people, has been expanded into a first-class wine & food experience. Today, up to 700 people visit the winery daily and enjoy the setting, the view, and the great wines along with excellent food. You come as a guest and leave Constantia Glen as a friend!

Constantia Glen
THREE – 2020
The Constantia Glen THREE, a cuvée of the three varietals Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, is an excellent example of the new generation of Cape Bordeaux Blends, which are in no way inferior to their European originals. The THREE, with its silkiness and soft fruit, is more akin to a representative from St. Emilion or Pomerol.
The 2020 vintage comes with aromas of dark fruits, ripe blackcurrants, and juicy black plums, underpinned by a scent of dried herbs. Beyond the initial ripe fruit aromas, there is a beautiful spicy complexity and lingering notes of white pepper, graphite, and cedar wood. The dark fruit aromas and pronounced spicy notes on the nose effortlessly follow on the first sip, where elegant, velvety tannins envelop the palate with vibrant flavor intensity.
The excellent fullness and concentration of the fine-grained tannins are underlined by an earthy minerality, and the wine's inherent freshness ensures a long, well-defined finish. This wine is balanced, elegant, and possesses Old World authenticity with its subtle notes of dried herbs underlying the powerful fruit aromas.
The wine appears tight in its youth and has incredible aging potential – optimal drinking maturity until 2037. This delicious assemblage was carefully crafted from grapes grown on the estate. It consists of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc and was aged for 18 months in 25% new, 60% second-fill, and 15% third-fill small French oak barrels.

Constantia Glen
FIVE – 2020
Constantia Glen's flagship, the FIVE, is a cuvée of the five archetypal Bordeaux varietals and stands up to virtually any Cape Bordeaux Blend. It is also on par with great calibers from its stylistic home in Bordeaux! But try it for yourself!
With its Cabernet-based blend, in the style of a Médoc, the FIVE 2020 convinces with perfect balance. The 2020 offers: Dark and deep aromas of sour cherries, ripe blackcurrants, and juicy black plums, underpinned by a scent of violets and dried herbs. Spicy background notes of cocoa, cedar wood, and graphite.
On the palate, a powerful, rich, and concentrated start with dark fruit aromas, while the mid-palate shows fantastic balance and finesse. This convincing, structured wine is beautifully centered and possesses excellent freshness, elegance, and depth.
The delicious, fine-grained tannins provide a mouth-filling texture and excellent persistence and length. The wine appears tight in its youth and has incredible graceful aging potential.
Optimal drinking maturity until 2037. A carefully crafted assemblage of 28% Cabernet Franc, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 17% Petit Verdot, and 10% Malbec. Aged for 19 months in 72% new and 28% second-fill 225-liter French oak barrels.

I vividly remember the first meeting with Horst Prader, the good soul of Constantia Glen, who has co-managed the Waibel family's fortunes for over 60 years. It was "love at first sight/sip." Nevertheless, I never would have imagined that we would be so successful together in Switzerland. Over the years, Constantia Glen has evolved into the best-selling Bordeaux Blend producer in our assortment. Rightfully so! Of course, we have experienced a lot together. My stays in the Constantia Glen Shack* (allotment garden hut), which fortunately turned out to be a cottage, deepened and strengthened the partnership. Furthermore, I participated in various blending/assemblage tastings, where the composition of the new vintages was decided by the team over two days. Not to forget the many lunches and invitations that I was allowed/had to endure.
At this point, I would like to express my sincere thanks for the friendship, appreciation, support, and great cooperation.
Andy Zimmermann
*The Shack Story
During my first stay at the cottage, which is located in the middle of the Sauvignon Blanc vineyard and equipped with an outdoor shower, I was greeted at the gate by a security guard. When I explained to him that I was Andy and wanted the keys to the cottage, he said: "Ah, you mean the keys to the shack..." well, my expectations dropped a bit then, only to then take up my quarters with great enthusiasm in the solitude of the vineyard.
