Wine Critic's Glossary
Today, South African wines are rated by the most renowned critics in the world. However, not every score is read the same way: the scales range from 100 points to 20 points and up to 5 stars. This page helps to put the ratings into perspective. Click on a critic to learn more about their profile, methodology, and classification.
100-Point Scale
Popularized by Robert Parker in the late 1970s. In practice, only the top third is used (80–100). A wine is considered outstanding from 90 points onwards.

One of the world's leading wine magazines since 1975, with readers in over 90 countries. Since 2004, it has hosted the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), the world's largest wine competition (over 18,000 entries/year), co-founded by Steven Spurrier.
Rating Methodology
100-point scale (previously 20 points). In the magazine: three-panel blind tasting; at the DWWA: medals for Bronze (85–89), Silver (90–94), Gold (95–96), and Platinum (97+). The judges only know the region, style, and price category.

100-point scale: 96–100 "Extraordinary," 90–95 "Outstanding." Ratings are based on samples, trial bottles, or winery visits; sometimes blind, sometimes open.

Jamie Goode is a British wine journalist with a PhD in plant biology. His blog, wineanorak.com, has been one of the world's most widely read independent wine sites since 2000. He writes for Decanter and The World of Fine Wine. Author of "Wine Science," "I Taste Red," and "Regenerative Viticulture."
Rating Methodology
100-point scale, but conservative with high scores. By his own account, he has never awarded 100 points. Scientifically grounded approach, emphasizing balance, finesse, and terroir.

Born in Pretoria, he grew up as a diplomat's son around the world. After studying economics in the USA and a career as a commodities trader, he moved into the London wine trade in 2000. Master of Wine since 2007. Over 20 years as a Senior Wine Buyer at Handford Wines in South Kensington; now a fine wine consultant. Columnist for Winemag.co.za and judge at the IWSC and Decanter World Wine Awards.
Rating Methodology
100-point scale. Tastings are both sighted and blind. Considered extremely knowledgeable in South African wines with a special eye for terroir expression.

American wine critic, nearly 30 years as Senior Editor and European Editor of Wine Spectator. In 2010, he founded JamesSuckling.com, which now rates over 25,000 wines annually. Special expertise in Italian wines, Bordeaux, and Port.
Rating Methodology
100-point scale, rarely publishes scores below 88 points. Below 88 is "not recommended," 90+ is "Outstanding," 95+ is "Must Buy," 100 is perfect. Tastings are sometimes open, sometimes blind.

Profile
Founder of the 100-point scale and the most influential wine critic in the world for decades. In 1978, he founded the advertising-free newsletter "The Wine Advocate." His ratings had a direct impact on wine prices, especially in Bordeaux and California. Retired since 2019; the Wine Advocate is continued by a team, including Monica Larner for South Africa.
Rating Methodology
50–100 point scale. Base score of 50, then up to 5 points for appearance, up to 15 for nose, up to 20 for palate, and up to 10 for overall impression. Parker tasted independently and not blind. He preferred concentrated, ripe, extract-rich wines ("Parker style").

American wine critic. From 1985 to 2014, he was editor of the influential "International Wine Cellar" (IWC), which was considered a direct competitor to Parker's Wine Advocate and was read in over 34 countries. Editor at Vinous since 2014. Special expertise in Bordeaux, Burgundy, California, and South Africa.
Rating Methodology
70–100 point scale (narrower band than Parker). Factual, precise style. Prefers cooler climate styles, elegance, and structure.

Profile
British Master of Wine, wine journalist, and photographer with over 40 years of experience. Since 2013, he has published his annual "South Africa Special Report," the most comprehensive single report on South African wines worldwide. Every year, he spends several weeks at the Cape and tastes over 2,000 wines from about 400 producers. Co-Chairman of the International Wine Challenge.
Rating Methodology
100-point scale. Wines appear in the report from 90 points onwards; 95+ is considered the equivalent of his gold medal. He has awarded 100 points eight times so far (since 2013). Additionally, there are special awards ("Winemaker of the Year," etc.) and an annual classification of the best 325 producers based on the Bordeaux model.

Vinous is an online wine publication founded in 2013 by Antonio Galloni. Neal Martin is responsible for South Africa; he is a British critic who previously handled Bordeaux En Primeur for Robert Parker. He moved to Vinous in 2018, where he rates Bordeaux, Burgundy, South Africa, and New Zealand. Known for eloquent, detailed tasting notes.
Rating Methodology
100-point scale. Martin is considered rather conservative and prefers elegant, terroir-driven wines over lush styles.

Profile
Founded in 1988, it is one of the most widely read wine publications in the USA (over 5 million readers). It rates around 25,000 wines annually. The critic team includes Monica Larner and Michael Schachner, among others.
Rating Methodology
100-point scale: 98–100 "Classic," 94–97 "Superb," 90–93 "Excellent." Blind tasting in peer groups by region and grape variety.

One of the world's most famous wine magazines, founded in 1979. It rates over 15,000 wines annually. The "Top 100" list at the end of the year is one of the most influential rankings in the wine world.
Rating Methodology
All ratings are blind: tasters know neither the producer nor the price, only the grape variety and vintage. The score is an overall grade, not a sum of individual categories. 95–100 "Classic," 90–94 "Outstanding," 85–89 "Very Good."

South Africa's leading independent online wine publication, emerging from the printed Wine Magazine (1993–2011). Editor-in-chief Christian Eedes leads blind tastings and publishes annual category reports (Chenin Blanc, Syrah, Cape Bordeaux Blend, etc.). The team includes Tim James, Michael Fridjhon, and Greg Sherwood MW.
Rating Methodology
100-point scale. Wines are tasted blind by a three-person panel, and the average forms the score. 96–100 "Extraordinary," 93–95 "Outstanding," 90–92 "Excellent."

Founded in 1992 by Swiss wine critic René Gabriel, it is now the leading German-language tasting magazine for wine professionals. After being acquired by the Konradin Media Group (2008), Gabriel remained as an author. Over 4,000 wine ratings annually, online database with 40,000 top wines.
Rating Methodology
Traditionally a 20-point system, sometimes presented in the KAPWEINE inventory with 100-point values. Always check the scale used in each report.
Classification
20-Point Scale
Originates from the French and British higher education system. Half-point increments (e.g., 17.5) are common, and every half-point makes a noticeable difference. It cannot be easily converted to a 100-point scale by multiplying by 5.

Rating Method
20-point scale, common in the Swiss wine world. Practice-oriented ratings for the consumer.

"Wine Pope of Switzerland." Originally a chef, he took over the Hotel Kreuz in Sempach in 1986 with a legendary 1,000-position wine list. 1990–2005 Chief Buyer for the Mövenpick wine retail group. Founder of Weinwisser in 1992. Also the inventor of the Gabriel glass.
Rating Method
20-point COS system (Color, Odor, Sapor). Emotional, philosophical style. No half points, in exceptional cases even 21/20. Focus clearly on Bordeaux and European classics.

Profile
One of the most influential wine critics in the world. Weekly column in the Financial Times, platform JancisRobinson.com. In 1984, she became the first person outside the wine trade to become a Master of Wine. Advisor to the wine cellar of Queen Elizabeth II. Described by Decanter as the "most respected wine critic and journalist in the world." Standard works: "The Oxford Companion to Wine," "Wine Grapes."
Rating Method
20-point scale, used sparingly. 18 points is already extraordinary praise from her. Contextualized within a peer group: A NZ Pinot with 18.5 is measured against other New World Pinots, not against Grand Cru Burgundy. "+" indicates aging potential.

The most important European wine magazine in the German-speaking world. Published in Zurich since 1980, ten issues per year, three country-specific editions (CH German/French, DE/AT). Over 750,000 readers. Organizer of, among others, the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse and the German Red Wine Award.
Rating Method
Traditionally a 20-point scale; since 2021, competitions have used the 100-point system, also used in the magazine since 2025. The 20-point scale: 17 "excellent", 18 "great, with aging potential", 19 "very great", 20 "phenomenal". Older ratings in the KAPWEINE inventory are 20-point.

The "Wine Bible of South Africa," published annually for over 45 years. Founded by John Platter, today published under the direction of Cathy van Zyl MW and Philip van Zyl. Around 15 experienced tasters evaluate approximately 8,000 wines from nearly 900 wineries annually.
Rating Method
5-star scale in 0.5 steps, since 2015 also a 100-point scale (5 stars = 95+). Two-stage process: First, an assigned taster evaluates sighted; all wines 93 points and above go into a blind panel round for the 5-star decision. In addition: "Wines of the Year" (category winners), "Hidden Gems," and "Buy Now Drink Later."

50–100 Punkte. Basispunktzahl 50, dann bis 5 Punkte für Aussehen, bis 15 für Geruch, bis 20 für Geschmack, bis 10 für Gesamteindruck. Parker verkostete unabhängig und nicht blind. Er bevorzugte konzentrierte, reife, extraktreiche Weine («Parker-Stil»).

Traditionell 20-Punkte-System, wird im KAPWEINE-Bestand teils mit 100-Punkte-Werten geführt. Pro Bericht immer die verwendete Skala prüfen.

Ursprung im französischen und britischen Hochschulsystem. Halbpunktschritte (z. B. 17.5) sind gängig, jeder halbe Punkt macht einen spürbaren Unterschied. Lässt sich nicht einfach ×5 auf 100 Punkte umrechnen.

20-Punkte-Skala, sparsam bei der Vergabe. 18 Punkte sind bei ihr bereits ausserordentliches Lob. Kontextualisiert innerhalb einer Peergroup: Ein NZ-Pinot mit 18.5 wird gegen andere Neue-Welt-Pinots gemessen, nicht gegen Grand-Cru-Burgunder. «+» deutet Reifepotenzial an.

Bewertungsmethode
Traditionell 20-Punkte-Skala; seit 2021 Wettbewerbe im 100-Punkte-System, seit 2025 auch im Magazin. Die 20er-Skala: 17 «exzellent», 18 «gross, mit Alterungspotenzial», 19 «ganz gross», 20 «phänomenal». Ältere Bewertungen im KAPWEINE-Bestand sind 20-Punkte.

Die «Weinbibel Südafrikas», seit über 45 Jahren jährlich erscheinend. Gegründet von John Platter, heute herausgegeben unter Leitung von Cathy van Zyl MW und Philip van Zyl. Rund 15 erfahrene Verkoster bewerten jährlich ca. 8'000 Weine von fast 900 Weingütern.
Bewertungsmethode
5-Sterne-Skala in 0.5-Stufen, seit 2015 zusätzlich 100-Punkte-Skala (5 Sterne = 95+). Zweistufiger Prozess: Erst bewertet ein zugeteilter Verkoster sighted; alle Weine ab 93 Punkten kommen in eine blinde Panel-Runde zur 5-Sterne-Entscheidung. Dazu «Wines of the Year» (Kategoriesieger), «Hidden Gems» und «Buy Now Drink Later».
