May's Vision and Passion

In 2003, at the age of 78, May de Lencquesaing, then owner of the legendary Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Bordeaux, embarked on a new adventure on South African soil when she acquired Glenelly Estate in Stellenbosch.
Paying homage to the French Huguenot settlers, she planted the first vines after a careful study of the terroir and built a thriving winery. Her vision is to establish Glenelly as a world-class winery producing award-winning wines with power, elegance, and balance.

Of the 123 hectares of the estate, 57 hectares are planted with vines. Each grape variety was planted in specific locations after a comprehensive soil analysis was carried out in 2003. The main focus is on the red Bordeaux varieties and Syrah for the red wines and Chardonnay for the white wines. The remaining part of her land is dedicated to olive trees, fynbos, and other indigenous plants found only at the Cape.

Lady May is the flagship of Glenelly's estate. The 2017 Bordeaux Blend pays tribute to the pedigree of its legendary owner, May de Lencquesaing – balanced, refined, and mineral. It is fruity, fresh, stylish, and subtle, with dense tannins and a long finish. It is made from a single Cabernet Sauvignon block, with small proportions of Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc.

Elegant and complex, the wine develops aromas of cassis, blackcurrant, dark cherry, a hint of graphite, and subtly spicy plum. The wine's development is fresh and vibrant, bringing forth the aromas typical of Glenelly's terroir. The wine has a deep color, is perfectly balanced, and boasts an exquisite structure with velvety tannins and very good aging potential.
