Cabernet Sauvignon
by Thelema
When a wine combines structure, elegance, and depth, it deserves to be in the spotlight.
That's exactly what the Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 from Stellenbosch delivers – which is why it's our Red Wine of the Year 2025.

Why is this wine special?
The Thelema Mountain Vineyards winery is located on the southeastern slopes of Simonsberg in Stellenbosch. These elevated areas are among the coolest and highest in the region. Together with the deep red granite soils, they create perfect conditions for growing high-quality grapes.
Thelema sees itself as an ambassador for its terroir. The philosophy is clear: intervene as little as possible to allow the wine to express as much of its origin as possible.
Furthermore, the grapes come exclusively from their own vineyards. They are carefully harvested and processed to ensure their quality is palpable in the glass. The 2021 vintage impressively demonstrates what this winery can achieve – with fine aromatics, mature structure, and balanced freshness.
It's no wonder that Thelema gives this vintage an internal rating of 9 out of 10 points – and quite rightly so.

Wine Description:
Complex, powerful yet precise: This Cabernet Sauvignon shows notes of cassis leaf, coffee, and leather on the nose. On the palate, dark chocolate and blackberries complement the aromatic profile.
Thanks to the elegantly integrated tannins, the wine appears structured and grippy, without losing finesse. The long, dense finish invites you to the next glass.
Perfect with…
For example, with butterfly lamb with rosemary and potato gratin. Or simply for a great evening with friends – this wine supports any menu.

Thelema – A Pioneer from Stellenbosch
In 1983, Gyles Webb took over what is now the winery – back then a charming but dilapidated fruit farm. He replaced the old trees with vines, laying the foundation for its success.
The first wines under the Thelema label were launched in 1988. By the mid-1990s, the success was so great that new vintages often sold out just weeks after release.
Today, Gyles Webb is considered an icon of the South African wine scene.
The estate is located at the top of the Helshoogte Pass, nestled in a stunning environment with old oak trees, mountain views – and the famous, colorful peacocks that have long become a trademark of Thelema.
The vineyards are situated at 370 to 640 meters above sea level, south-facing and with deep red soils. This makes Thelema one of the highest and coolest sites in the region – ideal conditions for elegant, long-lived wines.

The Current Range – Diversity with Profile
Thelema's current assortment shows how versatile and at the same time stylishly positioned the winery is.
The focus is on characterful red wines such as the classic Cabernet Sauvignon, the distinctive The Mint Cabernet Sauvignon, the velvety Merlot, and the spicy Shiraz.
Particularly noteworthy is the Rabelais – a selected blend produced only in exceptional vintages. It combines depth, complexity, and true aging potential.
But white wines also have their firm place at Thelema. The Chardonnay impresses with elegance and structure, while the Sauvignon Blanc delights with freshness and minerality.
