Tip #12 – Eight Wine Cork Ideas

Cork is a 100% natural, renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable material with very low impact on greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) into the atmosphere. But what do we do with it when we open a bottle of wine?
According to Statista, around 31.5 liters of wine were consumed per capita in the Swiss population in 2020. This corresponds to 42 bottles per person and over 210 million wine corks across Switzerland. But what happens to the wine corks, or rather, what else can you do with them? Here are a few ideas that you can implement with the corks from your KapWeine wine bottles.
1. Clean a rusty knife: Dip half a cork into a mild detergent. The cork allows you to grip and rub without risk. Alternatively, you can also put lemon juice and salt on the cork. The corks act like an exfoliant, removing the stains.
2. Make a candle: Cork is a very absorbent material, a property we can exploit by soaking it in alcohol for a few hours. Wait until it's saturated, then use it as a candle that can burn for several hours! To be safe, place your cork in a glass container.
3. Wine cork trivet: Cork is a natural insulating material and can be used to make a trivet on which to place hot pots without burning the countertop. It's quite simple: stand them upright together and place as many as you need to cover the surface of your pot. Then tie a large nylon band around it, and that's it!
4. Protect your kitchen from splashes: Ideal for protecting the front of your stove from grease splatters and other food stains without wasting money. Just like in Tip 3, line up wine corks, tie them together, and then place them in front of the stove.
5. Prevent scratches on the floor: Cut the corks into slices and glue the pieces to the bottom of chair legs to protect surfaces. So simple and without having to go to the hardware store.
6. Decorative stamps: An idea for all those who like to craft. Cork is relatively easy to carve into the desired shape. Use a felt-tip pen to draw the outline and a knife to start shaping the cork. With a little patience, it can become a stamp.
7. Decorative pots: It's quite easy to glue corks to a plastic pot. Even if the pot is round, you can conceal it by making the outside of the corks more angular. With a thoughtful design and careful execution, such a pot becomes a designer piece!
8. Keyring: Screw a ring screw into the cork with a screwdriver and use a ring or a metal piece to attach your keys. Glue a magnet to the end so it sticks everywhere, or customize the cork with dots or another motif that you like best.
