fact #41 – when did the «Old Vine Project» begin?

South Africa in search of old vineyards

South Africa has approximately 3,700 hectares of Old Vine vines and 10 vineyards that are even more than 100 years old.

Grapevines can live for more than 120 years, but not all producers keep them that long. Why? Because the yield of the grapevines decreases significantly from year to year after about 20 years. However, these vines have a great advantage: they lead to more concentrated and intense wines.

"Old Vine grapes show less fruit, but reflect the earth and terroir on which they grew. Old Vine is considered a mark of quality, possessing denser aromas because the vines root deeper to access water and nutrients," writes our sommelier and wine expert Andy Meyer in our Tip #33

The minimum age for vines in South Africa is 35 years. In 2002, the Old Vine Project began in South Africa with the search for old vineyards, and today there are approximately 3,700 hectares of Old Vine grapes and 10 vineyards that are even older than 100 years. Nearly 2,000 hectares are planted with Chenin Blanc, the most widely grown variety in South Africa.

If you have never tasted an Old Vine, it is worth taking a look at the selection.
