The founders of Damascene were united by three passions: the pursuit of excellence, the spirit of discovery, and the desire to preserve nature through sustainable agriculture.
"Less Cult, More Cultivation" – that's the slogan of the still-young winery from Elgin. The name Damascene means a unique, transformative moment. A merging and uniting. A special experience that changes perspective. It's about finding special vineyards and sites that express the incredible diversity of character of the various terroirs around the Western Cape. Each wine is a homage to the place where it grows. Jean Smit is on a mission to find and discover the best parcels for his wines. Accordingly, a terroir-specific diversity is bottled, especially for the Syrahs. For the grape varieties, the Damascene moment extends to Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The project is a partnership between esteemed Cape winemaker Jean Smit and David Curl, former owner of Château Gaby in Canon-Fronsac, Bordeaux, and now proud owner of Moya Meaker in Elgin. With their first bottling in 2019, they caused a stir and received much praise both locally and internationally. Respected critics hailed the individual bottlings as "a perfect collection of wines" and "one of the most exciting South African releases in a decade."
Damascene wines tell stories. They are born to express the way humans and place work together to form a narrative. Both the vineyard and the winemaker play a role in this story. The winemaker is the editor, and each wine reports on its own adventure.
All wines are from low yields, spontaneously fermented, and unfined. The bottles are individually numbered, and only a few thousand of each wine are produced.
