The wine heavens full of Platter's stars
De Grendel's success in developing new wine regions and achieving consistent quality across diverse terroirs is reflected in the four five-star ratings in Platter's South African Wine Guide 2022.
The De Grendel Elim Shiraz 2019, grown near sea level at Africa's southernmost tip, has received its third consecutive five-star rating, while the high-altitude Op Die Berg Syrah 2019 has hit the ground running in its first vintage with 96 points and the coveted five stars.
The Proposal Hill Brut Rosé 2016, also in its first vintage, received 4.5 stars and is one of eight De Grendel wines rated as outstanding with over 90 points.
The Sir David Graaff 1st Baronet of Cape Town 2017 and the De Grendel Rubaiyat 2018 from the Durbanville estate and more traditional wine regions also achieved five stars with 96 and 95 points respectively, earning them the status of "Superlative, South African classic" in the esteemed and comprehensive guide to South African wine.
Charles Hopkins, cellar master at De Grendel, is delighted that the winery has received four 5-star ratings for the second time. He is particularly pleased that the De Grendel Elim Shiraz (97 points) has now received the coveted five stars for three consecutive vintages. This comes two weeks after the wine made history with the highest score ever awarded to a wine at the Veritas Awards (98 points).
"I always say that quality is a journey, not a destination, and consistency is key. A consistent five-star rating for the Elim Shiraz across three vintages and five stars in two consecutive vintages for Sir David Graaff First Baronet of Cape Town are a clear indication that we are making progress in achieving our goals and consistently delivering excellence and quality.
A five-star rating for a wine in its first vintage, as achieved by the Op Die Berg Syrah 2019, which launched this year for the first time, is truly remarkable. Our patience in nurturing the new vineyards in the Witzenberg Mountains and ensuring that we properly mature the wine in the cellar rather than prematurely launching a maiden vintage has paid off," he said.
More than 20 years ago, Hopkins pioneered viticulture in the cool maritime climate of Elim, and more recently at almost a kilometer above sea level in the newly designated Ceres Plateau community. De Grendel's Op Die Berg series wines are the first to come from this area.
De Grendel's four 5-star wines were among the 234 out of more than 8,000 wines assessed and reviewed for the 2022 wine guide, and De Grendel was one of only 13 wineries with four (or more) wines receiving the highest rating.
Hopkins expressed his delight that a further eight De Grendel wines received 4.5 stars, signifying a rating of at least 90 points and "outstanding" status.
De Grendel Amandelboord Pinotage 2019, Op die Berg Chardonnay 2020, Op die Berg Pinot Noir 2019 and De Grendel Shiraz 2019 all received 94 points, narrowly missing five stars by one point. Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc 2021, Proposal Hill Brut Rosé 2016, Winifred 2021 and Sauvignon Blanc Noble Late Harvest 2020 also received 4.5 stars.
De Grendel Merlot 2019, Cap Classique Brut 2018, Sauvignon Blanc 2021 and Rosé 2021 were awarded four stars.
