Diversity & Class from the Cape
When done right, Sauvignon is a blockbuster
Sauvignon Blanc can be loud. Really loud. Vegetable attack meets exotic fruit basket – all at once, all immediately. But it can also be different: cool, precise, salty-mineral, with fine acidity and a clear signature. No nation shows this better than South Africa.
In the current Vinum market review, over 80 Sauvignons from around the world were on the table. Many were loud, some irrelevant. And in the midst of it all: South Africa. With wines that show how great this grape variety can be – if allowed.
Two wines, two styles – both top-notch
Two South African wines landed among the top five – that says more than any theory:
-
1st Place: Reyneke Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Stellenbosch – 96 points
Biodynamic, characterful, with depth and finesse. The wine is not a loud fruit bomb, but rather a quiet observer with emphasis. Precise acidity, subtle pressure on the palate, long finish – Sauvignon for advanced connoisseurs. -
5th Place: Diemersdal Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2022, Durbanville – 94 points
Completely different: Fresher, cooler, more open. Juicy, clear, animating. A wine that wants you to pour the second glass immediately after the first. And it can – because it’s good.
Diversity instead of uniformity
What makes South Africa so strong? The range. From "drinking wine" (please understand this positively!) to delicate food accompaniment – everything is there. Sometimes ripe and lush, sometimes crisp and tight. And often at half the price of comparable wines from Europe.
In addition: You can taste the origin. The fresh breeze from the Atlantic, the stony soils, the adventurous spirit of the winemakers. If you want, you can lose yourself here as a Sauvignon fan – in the best sense.

The perfect summer wine.
And what else?
At the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon in 2023, South Africa scooped up a whopping 56 medals, including 26 gold. Two wines even took home special awards. No more needs to be said.
Conclusion
South Africa's Sauvignon Blancs are like good conversations – sometimes demanding, sometimes charming, sometimes surprisingly deep. But boring? Never.
