World Competition
The best Sauvignon Blancs from 2022
Sauvignon's outstanding aromatic qualities make it one of the world's most popular grape varieties.
The world's best Sauvignon Blancs met in Brussels to show which of them had won the gold and silver medals in this category. An unprecedented number of awards were given for "Oaked Sauvignons".
The "Concours Mondial du Sauvignon 2022" – the largest and most important international competition dedicated exclusively to the Sauvignon grape variety – saw 1,120 wines from 23 producing countries participate. In addition to the gold and silver medals, the "Concours Mondial du Sauvignon" awarded special trophies to participants who achieved the highest scores in specific categories such as Sauvignon Blend, Oaked Sauvignon, Sweet Sauvignon and Best Sauvignon in the Competition.
This year, an unprecedented number of oaked wines were entered into the competition – 225, or one fifth of all wines submitted. Most oaked Sauvignon wines came from Styria and Bordeaux. And they performed very well: 35% of them received medals.
In 2022, the top five countries by number of medals are France, Austria, Italy, South Africa and the Czech Republic.
The region with the most awards this year is the Loire Valley with 100 medals. Second place goes to Styria with 71 awards, and third place is shared by Friuli and Bordeaux with 22 medals each.
Within the Loire Valley, the leading appellations are Touraine (34), Sancerre (23) and Pouilly Fumé (12). Touraine Chenonceaux performed particularly well: 63% of the wines submitted from this appellation received awards. The Denis Dubourdieu Trophy 2022 for the best Sauvignon in the competition was also awarded to a wine from Touraine Chenonceaux – the Domaine Jean Christophe Mandard Blanc 2020.
The competition aims to:
- Promote good quality wines from the Sauvignon grape variety,
- Encourage the production and conscious consumption of Sauvignon wines
- Familiarize the public with this multifaceted and versatile grape variety
- The Sauvignon grape variety enjoys great recognition and popularity internationally among both trade and consumers, and
- The popularity of Sauvignon Blanc.
Here is the list of the best Sauvignon Blancs from South Africa.
Diemersdal
The Journal – Sauvignon Blanc – 2021
Gold Medal – Revelation South Africa
The Journal Sauvignon Blanc is at the top of Diemersdal Wine Estate's Durbanville range and is clearly designed to make a statement. While the initial 2019 (90 points in last year's Prescient Sauvignon Blanc Report) shone with fynbos, citrus, peach, blackcurrant, vanilla and some lye character on the nose and an extraordinarily rich and intense taste on the palate, the 2020 seems to possess more serenity.

Sailors call the bowline the "king of knots" – a strong, simple knot that symbolizes unity, completion and eternal devotion. This white blend "ties the knot" between Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. An elegant Bordeaux blend with aromas of ripe fruits such as white pear and figs with a subtle layer of toasted almonds. A fresh and crisp palate with a hint of well-integrated oak, which underlines the richness and complexity of the wine.
