Vinifikation Porseleinberg is home to a groundbreaking Cape Syrah that exemplifies the essence of a terroir-driven, authentic wine. The extremely rugged and dry slate mountain does not invite easy viticulture, but of course, an extreme terroir produces extreme wines! The always limping and hospitable Callie Louw is the farmer, winemaker, and guardian of this special vineyard. At home on his John Deere tractor, Callie produces a profound and, frankly, delicious wine. Callie Louw also makes his own labels with an old-school letterpress, which he always enjoys demonstrating to visitors. This wild Swartland Syrah is grown on a rugged, slatey outcrop called "Porcelain Mountain" southeast of Riebeek-Kasteel. This extreme terroir, combined with straightforward viticulture, results in a truly unique Cape Syrah that boasts enormous character and a remarkably Rhône-like structure. 100% fermented as whole grape clusters, with regular punch-downs during fermentation. Further aging took place for 12 months, 95% in foudres and 5% in concrete eggs. No fining or post-fermentation maceration.
