Product Description:
The 2016 GPS Klein River Syrah is a new addition to the Kershaw range. It has a very perfumed bouquet of raspberry, crushed strawberry, fennel and sage, with discreet camphor notes surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, lovely balance and a touch of spice on the harmonious, persistent finish.

Vinifikation
During the year, I have the opportunity to visit a number of areas beyond Elgin. Occasionally, I stumble upon something so fascinating that it deserves a closer look. Almost 20 years ago, the first Syrah vines were planted in one of South Africa’s smallest appellations, the Klein River. Traditionally used for sheep and wheat, 3 ha of virgin Glenrosa Shale soils were earmarked for Syrah. These soils are typically the hallmark of warmer areas but these vines nestle against the Klein River Mountain range. The nearby Akkedis Valley provides a portal through which cool maritime breezes from the nearby Walker Bay can permeate, creating a mild mesoclimate during summer. Wines produced from these vines have consistently received acclaim and awards, so I had no second thoughts about making wine from these vines. The GPS series is a testament to this special place. The grapes were hand-harvested under autumnal skies into small lug baskets and then hand-sorted, manually on a conveyor belt, before the stems were removed. The destemmed berries dropped onto a vibrating table to remove inferior berries before going uncrushed into an open fermenter. The grapes were macerated for three days and spontaneously fermented. The must remained on the skins for 19 days, and then the free-run juice was put into wooden barrels. Malolactic fermentation then continued in the barrel, followed by a 16-month maturation. No fining was necessary, and the wine was simply bottled unfiltered. Only 228-liter Burgundy barrels were used, 43% of which were new.
