The 2021 White is sourced from a vineyard that effectively forms the backbone of Chris Alheit’s Cartology. It is matured in used French oak. It has a beautiful, detailed bouquet with mineral-infused citrus fruit, quite slate-like and with impressive focus. The palate is saline, lightly spicy with a subtle oily texture, long and tender on the finish. Outstanding.

Vinifikation Donovan Rall’s flagship wine, the 2021 Rall White, is another beauty. The assemblage of Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, and Viognier reflects the times and the trend towards more precise, age-worthy white wines. In the early days, it was very much about more structured wines, similar to the older vintages of Palladius. 2017 was the first vintage where Chardonnay was removed from the blend in favor of a higher percentage of Verdelho. It is an amazingly versatile varietal and Donovan’s secret weapon. It raises the acidity by at least a gram and is not fully malo-ed, so it's beautifully crisp without losing texture. The components are separately vinified, the Verdelho and Viognier in 500-liter barrels and the Chenin in old barriques. There is no new oak used whatsoever.
