Product Description:
Tinta Barocca is a great terroir communicator and has a long-standing relationship with the Swartland, with spicy herbal aromas and dark purple, plum-like fruit that transitions into very dense and compressed tannins. As mentioned, Tinta Barocca's tannins behave similarly to Nebbiolo's. Historically, Tinta Barocca is perhaps the most significant red grape variety that transports the terroir and typicity of a site into the bottle. This 2023 Treinspoor comes directly from the blocks with complex spicy and earthy aromas. The entire wine smells of beautiful, freshly plowed soil. The earthy aromas and bright red fruit scents are close together, resting on tannins and acidity that will carry it into the future.

Vinifikation
The Tinta Barocca, an old Portuguese grape variety, has a long tradition in Swartland and thus a historical significance at the Cape. The vineyard, with its bush-like plants (Gobelet system), was planted in 1974 on weathered granite near an old railway line (hence the name) and produces a deep-coloured red wine with fresh acidity and all the attributes of a great wine. Normally, Tinta Barocca is a popular blending partner. The very delicate skin of the Tinta Barocca is very susceptible to sunburn, but in this case, the old bush vines with their canopy formed a great framework to protect the grapes from the intense sun. Tinta Barocca has the structure of the Nebbiolo grape and the aromatic orientation of Syrah, a great combination. It yields wines with great character and expression that are long-lived. The grapes are fermented 50% as whole bunches and 50% destemmed. Fermentation lasts 25 to 30 days before the wine is pressed. Due to the high tannin content, only buckets are used during fermentation, as the grapes easily over-extract. Matured for 11 months on the lees in old wooden vats and then for one month in concrete tanks.
