Vinifikation The 2020 Pinot Noir harvest will be remembered as more abundant after the difficult and extremely low-yielding 2019 vintage. Overall, the year was much wetter than the preceding years – with a total annual rainfall of almost 900 mm for the Vrede vineyard in the 2019 calendar year. Very good rainfall in October and January largely mitigated the drought pressure. In terms of temperature, the vintage was cooler than 2019 and on par with the celebrated 2015 vintage. With prevailing dry conditions hopefully in the past, we now invite you to the three 2020 Storm Pinot Noirs. They are all special wines, partly because they are so full of character and terroir-driven, and partly because the quantities are slightly higher compared to the 2019 vintage. The Ignis Pinot Noir comes from a north-facing slope in the upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The vineyard is organically farmed and interspersed with round pebbles on the soil surface and decomposed granite underneath. The Latin word "ignis" means "fire" and refers to the fact that granite is an igneous rock formation – "from fire to stone".
