Vinifikation
The three 2019 Storm Pinot Noirs are all special wines, partly because they are so characterful and terroir-driven, and partly because there is so little of them. These two aspects – quality and scarcity – are intertwined. An inconvenient truth of the wine world is that low yields are great for wine intensity. 2019 was the culmination of three years of bone-dry soils. While vines are drought tolerant, 2019 was the year when the stress reached a crescendo. Darwin and Mother Nature are wonderful dance partners. A vine’s primary job is to nurture its progeny – its seeds/grapes. When you push vines to their absolute limits with three years of drought, they focus all their energy into only a few bunches. And if we do our job properly, that intensity goes into the fermenter, the barrel, and eventually the bottle. The Ridge Pinot Noir is from a cool east-facing slope on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge with stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld Shale soils with low nutrient levels.
