The vineyard is in very good condition and this year the last 100 vines will be planted out, to be newly stocked and grafted next year. In the last 15 years, the wine has gained elegance, underpinned by an immense texture. The 2023 Mev. Kirsten shows aromas of lime, citrus, and Melba toast, enveloped by a freshness that transitions from pear skin into green apple and continues. The hallmark of recent vintages across all Chenin vineyards is that we have full wines with radiant acidity and linear finishes. Consequently, this is one of the most restrained vintages with an incredibly complex character. As always, the wine has considerable volume and viscosity.

Vinifikation This 1-hectare Chenin Blanc parcel, most of which was planted in the 1920s, is the oldest in the country. Unfortunately, the old vines are slowly dying, which is why they require elaborate preservation. By chance, Eben discovered this site in the Jonkershoek Valley, at the foot of Bothmaskop in the middle of Stellenbosch, and persuaded Mrs. Kirsten to look after this vineyard. Over the past three years, extensive investments have been made in this vineyard, and this is noticeable on many levels, not only in the vines and the chemistry of the grapes, but in all areas as well as in the interplanting. An interesting fact is that the younger vines in this vineyard ripen about two weeks before the old vines, so they are harvested first and vinified separately. The whole grape bunches are fermented in 500L barrels and the Mev Kirsten matures for 12 months in foudre and wooden barrels.
