Vinifikation Van Loggerenberg Wines was founded by Lukas and his wife, Roxanne, with their first vintage in 2016. The 2019 vintage is the fourth release for Lukas—a rising star, Young Gun, and Tim Atkin’s 2018 Young Winemaker of the Year. Lukas grew up in Rawsonville in the Breede River Valley, always surrounded by vineyards and wine. His wines are produced in the Devon Valley, with the grapes sourced from Stellenbosch, Paarl, and the Swartland. Each wine and its name has a specific story behind it, and his wines have become highly sought after. As a youngster growing up in Rawsonville, a few friends and I used to hike up the mountain to a swimming spot we had discovered. To reach this pool, we had to jump from a 5-meter-high cliff. When it was my turn to jump, hesitation would creep in, and the jump seemed impossible. When my friend cheered me on and reminded me that I could do it, I would take a deep breath and take that leap of faith. Those few seconds in the air are indescribable! Screaming GERONIMO at the top of your lungs. For a few seconds in the air, you feel like a bird just soaring through the sky. This wine/label reminds us of the great leap of faith we took when we embarked on this big venture, with friends cheering us on, helping us, and making us realize that we could do it. The wine is made from 2 parcels; one vineyard was planted in 1978 and the other in 1992. Both vineyards belong to a farm called Rustenhof, located in the Firgrove area of Stellenbosch. These bush vines are dry-farmed. The soils consist of decomposed granite with sandstone underneath, which gives this wine its elegance and finesse. The grapes were spontaneously fermented with 60% whole bunches, with daily punch-downs. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation in barrels and, after 9 months of storage in old French oak barrels, was blended and bottled immediately thereafter. Geronimo is bottled earlier than Lukas' other red wines to preserve the crisp fruitiness typical of Cinsaut. No enzymes or commercial yeasts were used in the production of the wines.
