Vinifikation The 2019 vintage will long be remembered because on January 11th—less than three weeks before the first harvest—a massive fire swept through the Hemel-en-Aarde valley. We were fortunate to suffer little to no damage and were able to bring in a healthy, albeit slightly smaller, crop. The lower yield is a result of milder winter temperatures. Weather conditions remained cool and relatively dry through February and March. Not every vintage presents a Tête de Cuvée wine. The focus here is on refining the best Pinot Noir grapes in new wood to create a high-quality collector's wine. This bottling is considered the most promising wine from the cellar and carries the Bouchard Finlayson flag. The majority of the grapes for this cuvée come from the estate's oldest vines, with an average vine age of over 22 years. The winemaker selects individual barrels to assemble the chosen components—in this case, only six, half of which are new oak.
