Vinifikation The grapes for our Boekenhoutskloof Syrah come from selected parcels on our Swartland farms Porseleinberg (80%) and Goldmine (20%), near the small town of Riebeek-Kasteel. The vineyards of Porseleinberg are situated on extremely hard and rocky micaceous schist - a unique terroir within the appellation. The Goldmine vineyards are located on the southwestern slopes of Kasteelberg and consist of brown schist with deposits of Table Mountain sandstone, weathered and washed down from the adjacent mountain. The delicate combination of these two characteristics allows for this expression of concentrated and structured wines from this Rhône grape variety. The winter preceding the 2020 Swartland Syrah harvest provided suitable chill units during dormancy, ensuring a good start to the vineyard cycle. In late spring/early summer, the vines showed good fruit set with uniform berry sizes. A moderately dry growing season followed, leading to average yields. We experienced moderate alcohol levels and lower pH values, accompanied by bright fruit. Fortunately, the 2020 vintage of Syrah will not be remembered for the extreme heat spikes that have become common in recent years. These tend to stress the grapes in Swartland. The opposite was true: an extremely elegant vintage for such a warm appellation. Our Syrah grapes were hand-picked and transported in lug boxes to Boekenhoutskloof in Franschhoek for winemaking. The grapes were chilled in our cold room and then transferred to tulip-shaped concrete tanks for fermentation. A combination of partially destemmed and whole bunches (40%) was spontaneously fermented with minimal sulfur additions and no acidification. Gentle délestage was performed 2-3 times a day. After maceration, the skins are pressed and transferred by gravity into traditional 2,500-liter Austrian oak foudres and 600-liter demi-muids for further maturation of up to 18 months.
