Vinifikation
The 2014 red wine harvest at Constantia Glen was one of the most challenging of the last decade but, thanks to hard work in the vineyards and an uncompromising dedication to producing quality wines, resulted in some exceptional wines. The harvest followed a very wet 2013 where we received 1600mm of rain, meaning that the water tables were high and the soils of our dryland vineyards remained relatively cool and moist throughout the summer. It was thus a relatively cool and late vintage with a very long ripening period and a slow accumulation of sugars in the grapes. This meant that a lot of patience was required at harvest but ultimately paid off, with the grapes achieving good phenolic ripeness and well-rounded acidity by the time of picking. All these factors contribute to the great balance, texture and refinement in the finished red wines. The conditions were, in fact, well suited to producing our classic and elegant Bordeaux-style reds, and one can taste the coolness of the vintage in this Constantia assemblage. The 2014 harvest commenced with the first Merlot block on 25th March 2014 and ended with the last Cabernet Sauvignon grapes safely in the cellar on 14th April 2014. The wine was matured for 18 months in 80% new and 20% second-fill French oak barriques. Following maturation, the wine received only a light filtration before being bottled on 25th November 2015. This wine will continue to develop exceptionally well for 10 years from vintage during bottle maturation under the correct cellaring conditions.
