Vinifikation Early leaf fall after the 2017 harvest due to limited water availability. Winter temperatures remained higher than usual for an extended period, and winter rainfall only reached 80% of expected levels. The warm spring triggered rapid and even budburst in early-ripening varieties. Temperature fluctuations resulted in varying shoot growth and accelerated budburst. Above-average rainfall during flowering and berry set led to uneven berry development. Cooler night temperatures during ripening contributed to vibrant color and good flavor. Harvest began later, gained pace mid-season, and then slowed due to rain showers. Significant hail occurred on February 13th, causing minor damage. Despite the challenges and a smaller harvest, 2018 produced excellent wines. The grapes were lightly crushed and transferred to stainless steel tanks. Fermentation began with indigenous yeasts and a combination of pump-overs and open cap punching down. Post-fermentation skin contact lasted 2-3 weeks before the wine was gently pressed and transferred to new French oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation took place. The Lady May was aged in French oak barrels for 24 months.
