Product Description:
The first alluring feature of a young Pinotage is its color. The glass a dark purple, animated by red and blue hues. The wine’s apparent energy comes to rest in a bright violet pansy rim, inviting a taste. The scent of crushed boysenberries adds a sweet, floral note, followed by the density of dark plum. Distinctive aromas of baked nectarine, black cherries, and dark chocolate contribute to its intensity, which continues with a velvety texture and subtle earthiness. A bright hint of fennel and mint adds brilliance to the broad fruit, cooling its opulence with a savory sheen. Though dry, a sophisticated balance of fruit sweetness and astonishing acidity that tames its wild youth makes for a delicious and mouth-filling experience. The thoughtful use of oak adds clove and pepper, enveloping the fruit with fine-grained tannins. The same bright fruit announces itself on the palate, while the wine’s structure is underpinned by subtle aromas of licorice, tobacco, and the structured pulp of young blueberries. Towards the end of the glass, the initial color depth now dances with brighter burgundy hues. However, the elegant persistence and length of the taste invite a second glass. The wine closes with its initial berry fruit and assertive texture.

Vinifikation
The history of Pinotage is dotted with episodes of chance and fortune. The decision to cross two very contrasting varietals, Pinot Noir (the Prince of Reds) and Cinsaut (a South African workhorse), was rebellious. Since 1959, a group of determined winemakers has paved the way for Pinotage, making it the only unique and commercially successful South African grape variety. Our wine is a tribute to seven of these Cape rebels, who persistently overcame adversity and waves of criticism to secure Pinotage's rightful place on the world stage. This wine is a tailor-made blend from seven different vineyards, including Durbanville and the Stellenbosch communities of Bottelary, Jonkershoek, Simonsberg, and Papegaaiberg. These range from the home of South Africa's first commercially available Pinotage, to the creators of the first Cape Blend and the site of the country's oldest productive Pinotage vineyards. Seven new 225-liter and seven 225-liter second-fill Vicard barrels were imported, and the wine was personally selected by Vinoneers winemaker Etienne Louw for the various barrels. One new and one second-fill barrel were made from each vineyard, and the wine matured for 18 months before being assembled and bottled.
