The three 2019 Storm Pinot Noirs are all special wines, partly because they are so full of character and terroir-driven, and partly because there is so little of them. These two aspects - quality and scarcity - are linked. An uncomfortable truth in the wine world is that low yields are great for wine intensity. 2019 was the culmination of three years of bone-dry soils. Although vines are drought-tolerant, 2019 was the year when the stress reached a crescendo. Darwin and Mother Nature are wonderful dance partners. A vine’s main job is to nurture its progeny – its seeds/grapes. When you push vines to their absolute limit with three years of drought, they focus all their energy on just a few grapes. And, if we do our job right, that intensity goes into the fermenter, the barrel, and eventually the bottle. The Vrede Pinot Noir comes from a steep, north-east facing slope in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley with stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soils with low nutrient content.
