Product Description:
On the nose, the Chocolate Block is deep and dark, alluring with aromas of black fruit and a hint of pepper and spice. The blueberry and blackberry aromas on the bouquet continue on the palate with dark plum, dust, graphite, and cocoa nib notes. The wine is concentrated and elegant, with fresh and well-integrated acidity followed by fine-grained tannins that give it exceptional structure. Blackcurrants and milk chocolate linger on a silky finish.

Vinifikation The 2020 harvest was preceded by an exceptional growing season, built on the foundation of a cold winter in 2019, thus providing perfect conditions for the dormancy phase of the vines. In spring, early and even budburst led to homogeneous shoot growth, which enabled consistent fruit set and uniform ripening. Crucially, however, the Swartland experienced a temperate summer without major heatwaves, thus extending the ripening period. The sum of these conditions bodes well, especially for the flavour and acid retention of the wines. Syrah is the predominant variety from the two wine farms in Swartland, making up the largest part of the assemblage with a share of 73%. Grenache (11%) from vines on Porseleinberg is the subtle superstar of the blend, offering a fragrant brightness and a gastronomic texture to the wine. The moderate conditions were a welcome relief for Swartland and the Cabernet Sauvignon (7%). The cooler, balanced growing season was particularly advantageous, as it evoked a more elegant, old-world style in this variety. In summary: 2020 is a vintage of exceptional balance and texture with a youthful elegance. These characteristics certainly favour significant ageing potential. The Syrah and Cinsault are aged in a combination of 2500 litre and 600 litre French oak barrels, while the Grenache matured in Demi Muids. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the only component that was 100% aged in new barriques. The maturation period was between 11 and 14 months, depending on the grape variety and vineyard plot. For the 2020 vintage, 2982 barrels were selected.
