Product Description:
The nose is dark and intense, with aromas of black cherries, cardamom, sweet tobacco, espresso, and subtle perfume notes. The dark fruit character of the nose continues on the palate in an exceptionally complex, juicy flavor with gentle nuances of ripe plums, violets, black olives, cloves, and licorice. The mid-palate is concentrated, supple, and elegant, with very fine, cocoa-powder-like tannins. The wine is medium-bodied, very well-balanced, with an earthy, multifaceted character that covers the entire spectrum of berry fruits – from tart red plums to rich blueberries and blackberries. The finish is lean, clean, and dry, peppery and persistent, with hints of dried cranberries, tar, graphite, and smoke.

Vinifikation
The 2019 vintage was preceded by a very dry growing season which led to a record low harvest yield. Harvest volume was down 2% from 2018. The optimistic retrospective on these conditions resulted in smaller, more concentrated berries due to their higher skin to juice ratio. These circumstances, coupled with green harvesting due to uneven bud-break, were encouraging for producing wines of great complexity. The Swartland experienced moderate temperatures throughout December ’18 and January ’19, with the first heat waves hitting the appellation in February. The harvesting window for The Chocolate Block was a mere two weeks. Fortunately, our even greater reliance on our Porseleinberg and Goldmine farms’ vineyards made the two-week period manageable in terms of fruit intake and cold chain logistics. Early reports indicate 2019 to be another great vintage for Syrah with pronounced black fruit aromatics and a classical black-olive nuance. The predominant variety (71%) shows lovely inky black coloring in the glass. The Grenache vineyards on Porseleinberg are coming into their own, and this variety is without question the bright, perfumed star of the blend revealing an old-world, Châteauneuf-du-Pape-like charm. The ancient vine Cinsault remains an unheralded gem, effortlessly knitting the wine together and exuding a refined elegance. Coming in at just eight percent of this finite variety grown in the appellation, the Cabernet Sauvignon is essential for the structure and grip of the blend. Syrah and Cinsault were matured in a combination of seasoned 2,500L French Oak foudres and barriques. Grenache was matured in seasoned 600L demi-muids. Cabernet Sauvignon was the only component matured in new French Oak barriques. The élevage was between 13 and 16 months depending on the component and vineyard parcel. For our 2019 vintage, 2414 barrels were selected.
