New arrivals: Saxenburg

Fresh in from Stellenbosch

With Saxenburg, we are expanding our Stellenbosch range and are now offering these new wines for tasting in our showroom. Discover the Saxenburg wines and let us surprise you.

In January of this year, we visited Saxenburg Winery and met the owner Fiona Buhrer and winemaker Dirk van Zyl in person and had a tasting in the wine cellar. For us, it was immediately apparent that we had to give Saxenburg a place at KapWeine! Now, 2.5 months later, the first delivery of Saxenburg has arrived. And yes, the wines are excellent!

Saxenburg is a family winery based in Stellenbosch, South Africa. We are passionately dedicated to producing top-quality wines that express terroir, diversity, and consistent quality.

Saxenburg Mission

«Our mission is to share these wines with enthusiasts around the world to create wonderful and lasting moments.»

Saxenburg was officially proclaimed in 1693 and is one of the oldest farms in South Africa. Thanks to the combination of perfect natural conditions and a highly skilled and motivated team, the wines have received the highest praise in South Africa and worldwide.

MORE ABOUT SAXENBOURG WINES

When Adrian and Birgit Bührer took over Saxenburg in 1989, the farm – and South Africa as a nation – was desperate for rejuvenation. They stubbornly stuck to their vision thanks to their courage and unwavering perseverance.

They traded their familiar surroundings in Switzerland for a dilapidated homestead in the Cape Winelands. While they made significant changes to the property, the farm’s success is due to the entire team. «We started in 1989 with the promise of becoming one of the best Shiraz producers in South Africa. Today we can proudly say that we have achieved so much more.»

Saxenburg’s terroir is ideally suited to Shiraz, and it is thanks to this grape variety, Saxenburg has become a prominent South African export. Thanks to our winemakers’ belief that exceptional wines are made on the vine, we practice a well-managed system of summer pruning to keep yields low. With fewer bunches remaining, the grapes ripen to a more refined quality and less manual labour is required in the cellar.

Although famous for Shiraz, many Saxenburg wines – red and white – are enjoyed worldwide.

Saxenburg Philosophy

«A wine is a place. When this place and its unique and exceptional terroir are respected, world-class wines are produced»

Pinotage – 2020

The Pinotage is a medium-bodied wine that aims to express the elegance of Pinotage. The vineyard used for this wine reaches optimal ripeness quickly, which allows us to harvest earlier and ensure a lower alcohol content. On the nose, this wine shows beautiful mulberries, plums and cherries with hints of dark chocolate and a wonderfully long finish.

Shiraz – 2017

90 Points by Tim Atkin

The Private Collection Syrah has a beautiful nose of black cherries, red berries and a hint of pepper and spice. The palate is seamless – the tannin dense but fine-grained. The oak is beautifully integrated and only adds to the incredible complexity. Hints of crushed granite and floral elements bring freshness to the palate, which finishes with sweet spice.

Private Collection – Cabernet Sauvignon – 2017

4 Stars by Platter’s

The 2017 Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon was in many ways better than the famous 2015 vintage and this wine is proof of that. As is typical of Cabernet Sauvignons from the Polkadraai Hills site, this wine has incredible freshness and elegance, even though the tannins are still young and firm. Beautiful aromas of tobacco leaf, plum and blackcurrant lead to a palate that is beautifully weighted and fine-grained.
