Klein Constantia Rating

Tim Atkin 2022

South Africa is the world’s eighth largest wine producer and the fifth largest in the New World after the USA, Australia, Chile and Argentina, according to the latest OIV figures.

South African wines have achieved incredible prestige and this is thanks to the tireless work of South African producers. Last September we presented you with Tim Atkin’s list, an article you can read again at this link, and today we want to present the good ratings of the «Klein Constantia» winery.

About Kein Constantia

The 146-hectare estate originally belonged to «Constantia», a huge estate founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape. This particular valley was chosen not only for its beauty, but also for the decomposed granite soils on its slopes, gently cooled by the sea breeze.

Its wines have been tasted by the highest social circles: Kings, Emperors and Presidents. Writers such as Jane Austen have mentioned Klein Constantia wine in their works. It was also the setting for great stories that ended up on the silver screen, such as The Great Gatsby.

The wines that have won the heart of Tim Atkin:

«Described by Matt Day as an “insanely good vintage”, 2021 has delivered at Klein Constantia. Perdeblokke comes from two plots with different aspects and is the most Pouilly Fumé-like Sauvignon Blanc of the current releases. Flinty and herbal, with notes of sweat and earth and a taut, saline finish. 2023-28»

93 Points by Vinous – Neal Martin

The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Perdeblokke is reminiscent of sea spray and salty aromas on the nose. On the palate, it is beautifully balanced with a fine acidity. There is so much energy in this wine and it is so precise and pixelated on the finish. An outstanding Sauvignon Blanc from Matthew Day and his team.
