A historic winery reinventing itself
Vergelegen is one of South Africa’s most renowned and historically significant wine estates. Located in Somerset West, the estate looks back on a history that dates to 1700. For many years, the name Vergelegen stood for classic, structured wines with ageing potential.
But like many great estates, Vergelegen now faces the challenge of balancing tradition and modernity. With a comprehensive repositioning, the winery shows how an established name can successfully step into a new era.
New labels as a sign of a fresh start
A visible element of this transformation is the new label design. Vergelegen has revised its entire range and given it a more modern appearance. The new labels feel clearer, fresher and more accessible, without losing the estate’s heritage.
The redesign is more than just a visual update. It represents a new positioning aimed at engaging existing customers while also attracting new audiences. The wines are intended to be more approachable, clearly structured and better aligned with contemporary drinking preferences.
The influence of a new winemaker
Since October 2022, Luke O’Cuinneagain has been the new winemaker at Vergelegen. He took over the position from André van Rensburg, who retired after 24 years. Luke himself was the winemaker at Glenelly Estate in Stellenbosch from its founding in 2007 until 2022 and played a key role in shaping its success.
Gradually but surely, his influence is becoming evident in the style of the wines at Vergelegen.
The wines show less heaviness, more freshness and more precise fruit. Oak is used more deliberately to provide structure without overshadowing the character of the grapes. This style reflects the international trend towards finer, terroir-driven wines.
Matured wines as part of the identity
Despite all the modernisation, one central element remains. Vergelegen is known for its ability to age wines over many years and even decades. Mature vintages continue to be an integral part of the estate’s identity.
These wines demonstrate the potential of the vineyards in Somerset West. With increasing maturity, they develop complex aromas, subtle spice and impressive depth. It is precisely this aspect that sets Vergelegen apart from many younger producers.
A clearly structured range
As part of the revision, the portfolio has also been reorganised. Vergelegen now places greater emphasis on a clear hierarchy within its range. The aim is to better differentiate the various styles and provide customers with clear guidance.
At the same time, the estate’s DNA remains intact. Classic grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay continue to take centre stage. Yet today, the wines feel more approachable and precise without losing depth.

5 Stars by Platter’s
This groundbreaking red blend reflects the microclimate and terroir of Vergelegen. The grapes come from the estate’s warmer north- and northwest-facing vineyards, which produce juicy fruit and ripe tannins, and were hand-selected. Cassis, pencil shavings and spice dominate both the nose and the palate.

This wine comes from deep, red soils of ancient origin and clearly expresses the estate’s terroir. It shows complexity with aromas of blackcurrant, spice and ripe plums, complemented by fine notes of soft leather and oak. It has excellent ageing potential, while already being very approachable in its youth.

An opulent red blend with plenty of red berries and dark chocolate shavings. The texture is velvety with a plush finish.
Pricing and new accessibility
Another important step is the adjustment of the pricing structure. Vergelegen has repositioned its wines and made them more attractive in many areas. The aim is to make the estate’s quality accessible to a broader audience.
This strategy aligns with the new direction. High-quality wines should not only be collected, but also enjoyed. Vergelegen thus manages the balance between prestige and everyday accessibility.
Tradition meets modernity
The current development shows that Vergelegen is not standing still. The estate combines its long history with a clear view towards the future. New labels, a refined range and a more modern style make the wines more accessible without losing their identity.
It is precisely this balance that is key. Vergelegen stays true to itself while continuing to evolve.
The Somerset West region as a key factor
Vergelegen is located on the Helderberg in Somerset West, one of South Africa’s most exciting wine regions. The proximity to the ocean provides cooling influences that give the grapes freshness and structure.
The soils are diverse, ranging from granite to clay-rich compositions. This diversity makes it possible to express different styles within one region. Vergelegen uses this potential deliberately, creating wines with a clear sense of origin.
Conclusion: A classic in a new guise
Vergelegen proves that even great names can have the courage to evolve. The new range, the revised labels and the more precise style reveal a winery that is consciously developing further.
For wine lovers, this means an exciting blend of reliability and new dynamism. Those who know Vergelegen will recognise much of what they love. Those discovering the estate for the first time will find a modern introduction to one of South Africa’s most historic wine addresses.
