Fact #53

How many different grape varieties are there in South Africa and the world?

Wine is one of the oldest goods and was cultivated in the ancient civilizations of the Middle East, today's Egypt/Israel, 8000 years ago. Considering that wine is now grown worldwide, it can be assumed that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of grape crosses.

And indeed, there are an incredible 16,000 different grape varieties in the world. To list them all is almost impossible, as new grape varieties are constantly being added. In South Africa alone, there are 64 different grape varieties grown. To name, distinguish, and taste all these grape varieties requires a lot of time, patience, and perseverance. But nothing is impossible!

PS: KapWeine offers over 1200 South African wines in its assortment, from which you can taste 52 different grape varieties. This should be enough to start a tasting.
