Our colleagues at SonntagsBlick wanted to know again and conducted an international comparison of the "Chardonnay" grape variety. 45 Chardonnays from all over the world competed in a blind tasting.
SonntagsBlick selected Swiss and international wines. For the compilation of the 45 wines, they oriented themselves towards 100 Parker points for the foreign wines. All the Swiss wines had been pre-tasted. The wines had to be current vintages (2017-2022). The average price for the top 10 was CHF 62.70. A nine-member top jury with 2 Masters of Wine conducted the blind tasting.

Planted almost 30 years ago by the legendary John Platter, Clos du Ciel, which means "Heavenly Vineyard", has proven to produce an endlessly complex and unique, yet classic Chardonnay. Elegant stone fruits and citrus mingle with creamy oatmeal, light vanilla oak (30% new wood) and gentle aromatic spices for a seamless mouthfeel.

An old-world style Chardonnay with a fresh, fine-grained nose of quince, lime, and vanilla. Elegant, supple structure with subtle citrus, mellowed by a creamy texture and nutty complexity. Spicy mineral tones with fine intensity and balance; good focus and length with a refreshing finish.

South Africa generally scores well with its wines in terms of price/performance. The special terroir produces excellent wines of top quality. Those looking for a high-quality wine do not have to dig deep into their pockets for South African wines. Even at a low price starting from CHF 10, you get quality and high value for money.
The SonntagsBlick Blind Tasting Jury: Paul Liversedge (56) was the second of now five Masters of Wine in Switzerland, Nicolas Greinacher (38) is a wine editor for the Blick Group, holder of the Level 4 wine diploma, Lidwina Weh (47) is a trained sommelier and wine academic, Isabelle Thürlemann-Brigger (34) is a Swiss wine sommelier and is completing the WSET-4 course to become a wine expert, Caroline Dessort (49) is a wine academic, previously a buyer at Coop for Bordeaux (Primeurs) and Burgundy, among others, Adrian van Velsen (51) works in the advertising and media industry, discovered wine 20 years ago, Michael Matthes (60) is deputy head of production at the Blick Group, Swiss wine sommelier, Ivan Barbic (55) is a Master of Wine, meaning he holds the world's most significant wine diploma, Alain Kunz (60) is an editor at the Blick Group, member of Mèmoire des Vin Suisse.
