Klein Constantia Rating
Tim Atkin 2022
South Africa is the world's eighth largest wine producer and the fifth largest in the New World after the USA, Australia, Chile and Argentina, according to the latest OIV figures.
South African wines have gained incredible prestige, thanks to the tireless work of South African producers. Today we want to present the good ratings of the winery "Klein Constantia".
About Klein Constantia
The 146 ha estate originally belonged to "Constantia", a huge property founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape. This particular valley was chosen not only for its beauty, but also for the decomposed granite soils on its slopes, gently cooled by the sea breeze.
The wines were tasted by the highest social circles: kings, emperors and presidents. Writers such as Jane Austen have mentioned Klein Constantia wine in their works. It was also the setting for great stories that ended up on the big screen, such as The Great Gatsby.
The wines that captured Tim Atkin's heart:

Vintage 2021
95 Points by Tim Atkin
"The idea is, says Matt Day, to create a Sauvignon Blanc that takes its inspiration from Bordeaux rather than the Loire Valley. The wine comes from vineyards between 260 and 320 metres above sea level. The wine is fermented in 40% new barrels and has aromas of pink grapefruit, lemongrass and vanilla. Aromas and a refreshingly stony finish. 2023-28."

Aromas of ripe peach, grapefruit marmalade, blossoms and complex yeast aromas complement the toasted oak notes in the wine. On the palate, it is clean with a beautiful texture and a long finish.

"Described by Matt Day as an "insanely good vintage", 2021 delivered at Klein Constantia. Perdeblokke comes from two parcels with different aspects and is the Pouilly-Fumé-like Sauvignon Blanc of the current releases. Flinty and herbaceous, with notes of notes of sweat and earth and a tight, salty finish. 2023-28"

Perdeblokke – Sauvignon Blanc – 2020
CHF 39.00 instead of 49.00
93 Points by Vinous – Neal Martin
The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Perdeblokke is reminiscent of sea spray and salty aromas on the nose. On the palate, it is beautifully balanced with a fine acidity. There is so much energy in this wine, and it is so precise and pixelated on the finish. An outstanding Sauvignon Blanc from Matthew Day and his team.

Vintage 2021
93 Points by Tim Atkin
"The 2021 is the best of the trio of Klein Constantia Chardonnays currently on the market, reflecting the quality of the growing season. Fermented and aged in 60% new wood, it is focused and linear, with subtle cinnamon and nutmeg spice, tangerine and and lemon peel aromas, and an elegant minerality. 2023-29."

Brilliant and pale gold in the glass. Intense nose with vibrant stone fruit and citrus blossom aromas, with a hint of brioche and lime peel. On the palate, a concentrated perlage and lively, fresh citrus aromas are evident, concluding with a crisp, flinty finish.

Vintage 2019

"Inspired by Matt Day's visit to the Loire Valley – and still made in collaboration with Clément Olivet – Metis uses fruit from six higher-altitude blocks on the estate. Spicy and wild fermented, with a hint of wood spice, aromas of celery and white pepper and a very stony, almost austere finish. 2022-27"
