Value Wines

Robert Parker ratings

In June, the team of the renowned Robert Parker stopped in South Africa to rate South African wines. Here are the Value Wine Highlights.

Anthony Müller rated the latest South African wines for Robert Parker's Magazine. For many months they have been "looking for new producers, new bottlings and wines from the Western Cape", Müller said in his report.

"I must say that I am still very impressed by the quality, the price-performance ratio and the expression of location and terroir in many of the new vintages I tasted. With the impressive expressions that captivate the attention of drinkers, some sweet wines received the highest scores. Along with an excellent presentation of Swartland bottlings from Mullineux and Sadie Family and some rather impressive wines from Hamilton Russell, Keermont, Kershaw, Klein Constantia, Le Riche, Lismore, Raats, Rall, Tesselaarsdal and Warwick".

Müller also emphasizes that "the men and women of the South African wine industry all play their part. Each one is unique and an essential part of the woven tapestry that represents the vibrant history of South African wine. With voices as diverse as the landscape, there is always something to discover". The expert also praises "From long-standing wineries dating back to 1685, to young winemakers with capable, careful hands who have only been writing their story for a dozen years, to foreign voices who have found their way to the "Rainbow Nation", and local, indigenous voices paving the way for others - there is a wine for everyone."

Anthony Müller brings us good news: "Stay tuned for more critical reviews and a series of regionally focused reports that I plan to publish in the coming months along with full vintage reports, as I continue my coverage of South Africa, its wine industry and my search for the next wine, the next story, the next voice."

Here you can find the wines of the Value category, with Anthony Müller's reviews from Robert Parker. Enjoy!

CHOCOLATE BLOCK
Jonny Fischer's Afrika Charity - 2020
CHF 27.90 instead of CHF 34.90

90 Points by Robert Parker

The 2020 Chocolate Block is perhaps one of the most floral vintages I've seen in a long time. It is a blend of 73% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Viognier. The nose is robust, juicy and expressive with notes of blackberries, red and black spices and elegant violet flowers. The mouthfeel is medium to full-bodied and shows a balanced structure with concentrated tannins and an invigorating acidity that frames the mid-palate. The wine ends with a wonderfully persistent, fruit-driven essence with hints of tar, roses and baked stones. This wine will easily make it to its 10th birthday. 2,982 barrels were produced. Give it a try.

The 2021 First Lady Chardonnay is bright and fresh, with a hint of oak. It has a straw-yellow color and opens with a delightful bouquet offering ripe aromas of grilled yellow apples, pineapple and peach with hints of sweet lemon and baking spices. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, balanced and well-structured, with a hint of phenolic bitterness, while flavors of corn and lemon drops unfold in the mouth.
