The results of the Decanter World Wine Awards, the world's largest and most influential wine competition, are a definitive guide through the dynamic world of wine.
It is a good thing that South African wines achieve top rankings in wine tasting competitions. The latest stop is Decanter, which hosts one of the world's largest wine competitions, the "Decanter World Wine Award".
Each year, the results offer surprises and revelations that highlight the growth - or lack thereof - of quality and consistency. Discover the results of the 19th edition of the "Decanter World Wine Awards" now, which sets a new record for wines tasted.
South Africa received 2 Best-in-Show medals, the country's best result in this category since 2017, as well as 5 Platinum and 39 Gold medals.
What do the Decanter medals mean?
Every year, the Decanter jury tastes over 18,000 wines from 56 countries. Only the best receive a medal. Last year, only 635 wines received a gold medal - 3.51% of the wines submitted. Only 179 wines received Platinum. And the highest award - Best in Show - was given to only 50 wines. But what do the individual awards mean?
Bronze – 86 to 89 points: well-made, solid, satisfactory
Silver – 90 to 94 points: high quality, an exciting wine with personality
Gold – 95 to 96 points: an exceptional and remarkable wine
Platinum – 97 to 100 points: All gold winners are tasted again. The best of them receive Platinum
Best in Show – All Platinum winners are tasted again. The best of them receive Best in Show in their category.

Even though the pre-season was warm, the long hang time and cooler weather helped maintain the typical Cabernet identity in the bouquet. Just a hint of fynbos blends with deliciously dark aromas of blackcurrant and cherry in the bouquet. These are followed on the palate by notes of cedar and spice supporting the fruit on the mid-palate. The supple tannin structure offers enough structure, but light enough not to interfere with the wine's very long finish.

This fruit-driven wine tends towards a fresh style with lime, apricot and green pineapple notes on the nose. The oak component, which presents itself in the form of wood spice notes, is perfectly integrated and not overpowering. On the palate, the subtle sweetness combines with the fresh acidity to create a very elegant wine. As on the nose, the oak component is well integrated and offers vanilla and coconut notes that balance the fresh and vibrant fruit and almond notes.
