Wineries:
The small Cederberg wine region is located amidst magically bizarre sandstone rock formations, caves, gorges, crystal-clear streams, and snow-capped peaks. The "Cederberg Wilderness Area", about 250 kilometers northeast of Cape Town, offers breathtaking scenery. In this adventurous and barren area, vineyards are situated at an altitude of 950 - 1100 meters – these are the highest-lying vineyards in all of South Africa. The name Cederberg comes from the now endangered Clanwilliam Cedar tree.
The Cederberg area, located in the Clanwilliam Region, only awakened from its vinous slumber in the second half of the 20th century. This is largely thanks to the Nieuwoudt winemaking family. They recognized the extraordinary wine potential of the area and established modern vineyards at the foot of the 2026-meter-high Sneeuberg. The wines from Cederberg are characterized by the continental climate, with hot summers and very cool nights, and snow in winter.
The rainfall is between 500 and 600mm per year.
