Wineries:
Constantia belongs to Cape Town and is situated on Constantiaberg, an offshoot of Table Mountain. It is the oldest wine-growing region at the Cape, although it is one of the smaller ones. Currently, the Constantia appellation comprises around 10 wine farms, including Klein Constantia, which achieved worldwide fame for its sweet wines as early as the 18th century.
Constantia is considered a classic cool-climate region with average temperatures of 18 to 20 degrees Celsius. Here, elegant red wines are produced from the classic Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and more recently also from Shiraz. Above all, however, aromatic, crisp-fresh white wines from the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling varieties are found here in close proximity to the ocean. The average annual rainfall is a sufficient 800 to 1000mm.
