Wineries:
Constantia belongs to Cape Town and is situated on the Constantiaberg, which is an offshoot of Table Mountain. It is the oldest wine-growing region at the Cape, though it is one of the smaller ones. Currently, the Constantia appellation comprises approximately 10 wine farms, including Klein Constantia, which achieved worldwide fame for its sweet wines as early as the 18th century.
Constantia is considered a classic cool-climate region with average temperatures of 18 to 20 degrees Celsius. Elegant red wines are produced here, for example, from the classic Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but more recently also from Shiraz. Above all, however, aromatic, crisp-fresh white wines from the varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Riesling are found here, in close proximity to the ocean. The average annual rainfall is a sufficient 800 to 1000mm.
