Vinifikation Both the Syrah and Chenin Blanc are grown on our beautiful Swartland property, Goldmine Farm. The property is located on Riebeeksrivier Road, between Riebeek-Kasteel and Malmesbury and is situated on the south-western slopes of Kasteelberg. Soil types on Goldmine include brown shale, blue shale, quartz along with deposits of Table Mountain Sandstone (weathered and washed down from Kasteelberg). The bedrock is deep shale. Our experience with Goldmine and its soils results in concentrated, yet delicate and well-structured wines. The name Patina is derived from its origins. It refers to the gold prospectors with their mining pans and the patina that formed on their equipment over time. The grapes for our Patina Chenin Blanc come from a single vineyard on our Goldmine Estate, grown on shale and decomposed dolomitic granite. The Chenin has a particular affinity for the warm, Mediterranean terroir along the Riebeeks River at the foothills of Kasteelberg in the Swartland area. The cooler night temperatures without prolonged heatwaves during the day provided an excellent diurnal range and favourable ripening conditions. The grapes were harvested with optimal natural analyses, reflecting even ripening. One-third of the grapes were spontaneously fermented in concrete eggs, while the second component was whole bunch pressed and then matured for 12 months in French barriques and concrete eggs. The third component was fermented on the skins and pressed off halfway through fermentation, then transferred to our Nomblot concrete eggs.
