Vinifikation
The 2014 red wine vintage at Constantia Glen was one of the most challenging in the past decade, yet resulted in some exceptional wines as a result of hard work in the vineyards and uncompromising dedication to producing quality wine. The vintage followed a wet 2013, in which we received 1600mm of rainfall, so the water table was high and the soils of our dryland vineyards remained relatively cool throughout the summer. It was thus a relatively cool and late vintage, which allowed for slow accumulation of sugars, but the amazing characteristic of this vintage was that acidity was slightly lower than previous years at full ripeness, indicating good berry ripeness. The resultant wines are evolving to show great balance, texture and finesse, which will be especially well suited to our classic and elegant Bordeaux-style red blends. Careful viticulture practices and dedication to quality in the cellar have resulted in this perfectly refined assemblage, carefully crafted from 67% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was matured for 17 months in 40% new, 40% second fill and 20% third fill French oak barrels. A light filtration prior to bottling to further refine the rich tannin structure brought us another vintage showing the rounded, velvety texture that has become synonymous with the Constantia Glen THREE.
