The long days of summer in South Africa tempt you to pack a picnic basket, grab a blanket and head out. Here is a selection of restaurants that offer great picnic baskets.

Picnic among the historic mansion and vineyards or on the expansive lawn. Baskets start at R450 (approx. CHF 30.-) for two people. Vegetarians and vegans also get their money’s worth, and special children’s baskets are offered. So nothing stands in the way of the perfect pick-nick in Cape Town.

Buitenverwachting (Constantia)

Get a picnic basket with all the delicious treats you can imagine and enjoy the view of the Constantiaberg Mountains this summer. The pick-nick costs R300 (approx. CHF 20.-) for two people.

Cape Point Vineyards (Noordhoek)

It wouldn’t be a picnic destination in Kapsatd without Cape Point Vineyards. They offer a picturesque picnic experience to their guests. For R140 (approx. CHF 9.-) per person, the picnic basket includes a selection of cheeses and charcuterie, freshly baked ciabatta, milk cake and more. Enjoy the sun and the view with a glass of wine. Cellars-Hohenhort (Constantia)

Cellars-Hohenhort offers two picnic options for the ultimate picnic experience in the enchanted garden. For between R265 and R320 (approx. CHF 18.-) per person, you can enjoy a variety of tapas, freshly made quiche, mini scones and much more. If you’re in a celebratory mood, you can also serve some MCC with it! Please book at least 24 hours in advance.

Jonkershuis at Groot Constantia (Constantia)

The Lawns at the Roundhouse  (Camps Bay)

A picnic on the “lawns” (grassy areas) offers a vast green expanse and spectacular views of the mountains and the sea. For R595 (approx. 38.-) for two people, you can feast on fresh bread and dips, a cheese and meat platter, wraps, and the day’s cake. Remember to book at least one day in advance.

Simon’s in Groot Constantia (Constantia)

From 1 November, an absolute favourite makes its summer debut – find a spot on the lawn or at the chairs and tables and enjoy the stunning views while savouring the delicious treats from the Simon’s Picnic Menu. Highlights from the menu for two include hummus, chicken liver pate, local cheese, baguette, cold cuts and homemade cold cuts, classic coronation chicken salad and potato salad with mustard mayo. A basket for two costs R395 (about CHF 25.-), while a single basket costs R220 (about CHF 14.-). Vegetarian menus, children’s menus and halaal menus are also available.

Twelve Apostel (Camps Bay)

Twelve Apostles sets up a picnic basket at a romantic location for two people, with breathtaking views of Table Mountain and panoramic sea views. The package includes a picnic basket with delicious treats for R800 (approx. CHF 51.-) for two people.

The Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel (Cape Town)

The Mount Nelson Hotel is one of the most famous places in the Mother City and is known for its first-class accommodation, pristine surroundings and much more. In addition, the hotel offers gourmet picnics. The picnic is served in a wicker basket and consists of light bites, artisan charcuterie, cheese, homemade tapenades and more.

Picnic baskets cost R395 (approx. CHf 25.-) per adult and R250 (approx. CHF 16.-) for children.

The picnic basket is only available from Wednesday to Sunday from 1pm.

The Norval Foundation (Constantia)

Here we close the picnic guide in Cape Town. “The Norval Foundation” not only houses a number of impressive works of art throughout the year, but also a sculpture garden where locals and those interested can spread out a blanket and enjoy a summer picnic..

The Skotness Restaurant at the Norval Foundation offers ready-packed picnic baskets for R295 (approx. CHF 19.-) per person; this fee includes entry to the park and parking. Picnic baskets for children are available for R95 (approx. CHF 6.-) per person. The picnic basket consists of delicious bites, from mini lemon meringue to potato salad skewers with aioli. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance, and no picnic utensils are allowed.
