Overberg is a vast region located east of False Bay, along the route from Cape Town to Hermanus, one of South Africa's most beautiful routes. Hermanus is an excellent place for whale watching – and the old fishing village is also worth a visit for its bathing beaches.
The region does not have a long tradition in viticulture; in the 1980s, Tim Hamilton Russel first made a name for himself with his wines and established the region's reputation. The climate is rather cool and moderate due to its proximity to the sea, so Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive particularly well here. Even winemakers from Stellenbosch buy grapes from the Overberg region.
The top Chardonnays from this area impress with their elegance and finesse. However, the Pinot Noir, the South African Burgundy, also deserves mention. For all other planted grape varieties, the cool climate region produces aromatic, elegant, delicate, yet complex premium wines. It is no wonder that more and more producers from warmer regions like Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington, etc., are increasingly buying grapes from the Overberg in refrigerated transporters.
Some have bought vineyards or leased vineyards in the Overberg area in recent years or simply buy grapes to either bottle them separately under their own label. Often, especially with white wines, a portion of the fresh, crisp grapes from Overberg are blended with their own grapes, thus balancing the grapes weakened by "heatwaves," which are then bottled as flavorful wines with crisp freshness.
Good wines are also produced by the coastal areas "Walker Bay" and "Elgin" between Somerset West and Caledon. Much fruit is also grown in the Overberg region.
